Nah, that's just the English insistence on feeling important. Jim, I've been meaning to ask you: Do you use the biblical value of pi, or some pagan or secular humanist value?

Apparently, someone whose posts I ignore has been nattering on about an "ethical dilemma"...
It's certainly not that, although it is a little weird and uncomfortable at times. I don't challenge their woo (at least to the kids - but most of them are quietly non-religious anyway), and they don't tell me how to teach evolution or quadratic equations. I do bring up the pathetic record of the church with regard to dealing with sex offenders in its priestly ranks, but most staff are equally critical of that anyway...
I suppose I'm still there because of a sort of personal inertia, but, woo aside, the general teaching practices of the school are sound, and I get along well with other staff. I'm too old and set in my ways to start teaching somewhere else, especially since I've finally conned my way into the perfect teaching load...

Re: How far should our lack of respect for religion go?
Facebook is kind of a funny beast. Although my immediate family members are all secular, most of my extended family are very religious, some of them evangelical, young earth creationists. Bleh. Anyway, I posted something atheist on my wall and a cousin started pissing his religious crap all over it. I debated myself for a day or two and decided to let it go, but I unfriended him (he never posts anything but religious tripe anyway). Now, if it had been an in-person confrontation, I'd have handled it completely differently. I'd have engaged him in a one-on-one debate. But FB is just for fun, its my page, and I felt he'd intruded in a rude and offensive way. So, when other cousins post their religious twaddle on their own wall I don't argue with them. I figure its their wall, its kind of like their living room. I'm going to respect it as their space. Now, if they post something on MY wall, its another story all together. And I will respond. I remain polite but firm in my disagreement with them.

I think some people just think boundaries go out the window on the Internet. For that reason the defriending tool is quite handy.
