So if the others ARE the violence it follows that violence against them is justified. This would be counterviolence.


And when it the realm of violence, it is only the degree of force which determines who is the victor. With entire system of law and order, the military and police protecting the rich from the poor, only a force more powerful than the entire capitalist system is required to defeat it. Even millions of protesters would not have the ability to fight the police or the military, unlike previous phases of history where street protests could turn revolutionary.

Hoping that the cleansing fire of a nuclear holocaust will save us from Capitalism is a bit like throwing the baby out with the bath water, along with all the bathroom fixtures, and the house they sit in. That kind of thinking is just plain old misplaced millenialism - a desire for death expressed as a hope that we're living in the end of days.

You take 'Revolution' too literally. It's a revolution in thinking, in the awareness of who and what we are in relation to the world, that Marcuse hopes to inspire. From that all the rest will flow naturally. You want to overthrow capitalism? Stop buying shit you don't need and start helping others in your community in whatever way you can.

It's only natural to feel that retribution is justified when someone has wronged you. But what do you do with those feelings when you realise how you've wronged yourself and others?
