Your comment brings to mind the widows who are accused of some trumped up bullshit and murdered by the villagers so the family can profit by getting her possessions .. livestock, household stuff, etc. I read about this on the net a while back and tried to google it today, but I couldn't narrow the search down to the articles I'd read before.

The "puppet government" just kicked the livin' shit outta Pakistan. "We see no reason to bother negotiating with the Taliban, we'll just talk to their Pakistani masters." In public, no questions, no doubts, no horseshit. Pakistan tried to bluff and got caught. They're still whining, too.

Meanwhile, the US liberators are as successful in winning the hearts and minds of the Afghani population as they were in winning the Vietnamese a few decades earlier.

Inconvenient answer, I know. The truth is that I am not in favour of the US getting out of either Afghanistan or Iran. It broke them. It owns them. I just that don't see how the US administration can fix the problem. It's record is not so good lately. I think the last success - and it was a resounding one - was the Marshall Plan. It missed out on doing the same in Afghanistan by totally ignoring Charley Wilson's advice after he engineered the ignominious retreat of the Soviet military a few decades ago.

Short of conducting a massive deculturation campaign over the next 50 years, which means ousting the elites and replacing them; and sending a million more troops to make the occupation something proper, there's nothing to do, so, yeah.
