Sounds like she had the myth drummed into her growing up, and now despite the fact that she can see rationally that it's nonsense, she is cursed with the nagging "what if?" question prodding her in the ribs.
Or perhaps it has nothing to do with conditioning early in one's life. I have been brought up by two practising catholic parents and underwent the whole rigmarole; baptism, Sunday school, weekly masses and sermons, midnight mass at Christmas and Easter, regular confessions to a priest, confirmation, fasting during Lent, fish on Fridays - the works. Much of my reading, and I realised that only many years later, was infused with Christian messages and propaganda. I have spent holidays in places run by nuns and other religious organisations, and yet others that featured sessions in which we discussed spiritual issues. And yet, the "what if" nag has never troubled me. Since I turned from theism to deism, the prospect of condemnation by a supernatural being has become a non-issue. It certainly has remained so when I became an atheist.

Perhaps the non-believers who feel it is necessary to take up Pascal's wager simply haven't thought things through. I would not call them hypocrites for that.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould

Have a friend who is an atheist and was asked to be a god parent, she said she would only do it if she could be a fairy godmother and wear fairy wings at the christening. Amazingly the C of E priest thought that was a great idea

I got asked to be a god father once... I said, "that means I've got to teach them about god right? Oh, I'll teach them some good shit about god... Muaahahahaha"

I think they saw the mischievous glint in my eye or something, because they quickly changed their minds
