Never been anything but an atheist. Live with it.Exi5tentialist wrote:I agree. In the final analysis, no-one can really claim to be an atheist. Or at least no-one I've ever come across. Most people claiming to be atheists still retain profound prejudices based on the predominant religion of their parental culture. Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, Dennett are the prime example of this at one extreme; I haven't yet found the other... Sartre is a long way away from those four, though, if only because he remembers his own theistic roots, something most people are all too keen to forget.Animavore wrote:No.

I think one has to differentiate the personal belief in a supernatural creator entity as causation and the human instituations of religion which use the claim of such as a control mechanism to establish and define a cullture. I have no belief in Gods, I am well aware those who have, or have at least used others belief in it are the foundations of our societies. However the latter has little to do with the former and thus I am an atheist.

I was a Lutheran to 16. Then Jesus started to die, he was later cremated by me.

I'm always at a disadvantage when arguing with believers, because I don't know "where they're coming from". The idea of a Big Brother in the Sky just never computed.

The ecstasy of oral sublimation of the sex urge via an evil agency, sin personified, is the key you're looking for.Eriku wrote:Incidentally, I've never "gotten" the sexual aspect of vampires. As such, I've only got a semi for your avatar at present ;P

Re: What were you before you became and atheist?
When I was very young I went to a Catholic church. When I was still young, but not quite as young, I went to a Protestant church. However, I don't recall a time at which I ever believed in a god or any other of the religious fables. So I'd say I've always been an atheist, though didn't always know the word for it.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

I used to say that I wasn't religious enough to call myself an atheist. Then I decided what the fuck, it's a handy word.tattuchu wrote:When I was very young I went to a Catholic church.
