Re: There was me thinking I was an atheist all those years!
I am atheist - adjective. I am not: a believer in atheism, a practitioner of atheism, a follower of atheism, a worshipper of Ath, a fundamental atheist, the member of any atheist sect or denomination, or any other pseudo-religious bollocks pertaining to atheism.
I don't believe in any gods, a fact which labels me (in a society full of the trappings of religion) as (an) atheist. It isn't positive or negative, merely descriptive.

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

So, there we are. It's been interesting to see these comments.
For me, being a humanist doesn't make me feel any less of an atheist, but wearing the label makes others know that I care about others. And if in my job as celebrant I can help them to have things said at a wedding or a funeral that they think need to be said, then I'm doing something to act out that caring.

I will also admit to being anti-theist in select circumstances.
Secular humanist also works.

Others expect the label to involve, as a core value, direct and active conflict with religion. It certainly may involve this, but it does not have to, as the article in the OP seemed to imply it must...

There's nothing wrong with humanism. I'll take one. Hold the humans, extra cheese.

Re: There was me thinking I was an atheist all those years!
I'm frequently engaged on religious topics. I belong to atheist, humanist, skeptic, philosophy groups, and one which brings together the religious and non-religious to discuss topics arising out of the bible and a culture which is to a greater or lesser extent arising out of a biblically based culture.
I find that both atheists and humanists are far from mono-culture, all the way from appeasers and compatibilists to frighteningly militant anti-theists. There is a strain in humanism, at least locally, in which I see basically non-believers who aren't satisfied simply not believing; I'd say these people are looking for a sort of "atheism with benefits". And this group is quite clear that their humanistic philosophies have foundational issues, but they would rather believe something, anything, than feel they are letting the theists make everybody miserable. My recent thought on the subject leads me to believe that their foundational issues cannot be resolved, so they will always remain a bluntly political movement without a justifying philosophy, but that is okay, I guess, and my thinking is still fresh enough for me to go lightly on the confidence in it.
