Who was it said "A language is just a dialect with an army and a navy"?
"This is the first time that Jamaican Patois has been used to translate anything serious” said Courtney Stewart, the General Secretary of the Bible Society of the West Indies

If there is sufficient internal consistency in the language, then you should be able to translate anything into it, why not some Hitchens?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

"A language is a dialect with an army and navy" is a description of the distinction between dialect and language. It points out the influence that political conditions can have over a community's perception of the status of a language or dialect. The description was popularized by the Yiddish linguist Max Weinreich, who heard it from a member of the audience at one of his lectures.

If this is about Scots, then I have to say I'm not one of those who would try to argue that Scots is a language separate from English. Of course it's a dialect. Those who argue it's a language do so for political and not linguistic reasons. With my history of only limited success at learning Gaelic (’s e cànan doirbh a th’ ann!), which IS of course a different language, I could never argue that about Scots.
