Here too, the tradition of fish friday has only recently passsed out of fashion... back in the 80s/early 90s, if I wanted to eat out on friday, I had to go for Chinese, in normal places, meat was hard to get.

When I was in the Navy we always had fish on Friday. For lunch.Svartalf wrote:Here too, the tradition of fish friday has only recently passsed out of fashion... back in the 80s/early 90s, if I wanted to eat out on friday, I had to go for Chinese, in normal places, meat was hard to get.

Brian Fagan said Merika was discovered because the fish had moved and the norsemen went further to find newfoundland cod.

We were/are a completely non religious family but Friday was still always "chippy day" when i was a kid. especially at my (irreligious) grandparents. Took me ages to discover the religious connotation to it
I always assumed, and i'm not saying it isnt also the case, that the reason was at the end of the week the folks coulnt be arsed cooking and were looking forward to their night out at the pub whilst the gramps had me and my sister.
