Re: Dear Bishop, you're fired. Love, the Pope.
Youv'e missed the point about the reaction of most folk here to this sort of stuff... We don't shake our heads about how out of toch this is, or how politically incorrect it is...Seth wrote:Of course. But it's ignorant, arrant nonsense to expect any church to change doctrines that are (allegedly) handed down from God merely because modern culture has decided it's not "fair" that women don't get to be priests or that priests ought to be allowed to marry.Animavore wrote:Of course the Catholic church are free to follow their principles. And everyone else is free to point out what a bunch of out of touch dinosaurs they are. Ireland's and other Western Catholic country's church attendance is on rapid decline and they nicely continue to accelerate it with almost every action they take these days. It's no skin off my nose.
If the Catholic church had responded to every cultural shift in history, it wouldn't be catholic or a church. People adhere to the Catholic church in part because it's very determined to maintain its traditions. This is perfectly rational. If you, as a believer, understand that God's commandments require such things as male-only, celibate priesthoods, then the church is abandoning YOU by changing the rules and has itself become apostate and in defiance of God's commandments.
The whole Protestant revolution started by Martin Luther is an example of how people of faith solve such issues. If you don't like the strict doctrines of one church, go form another one.
And yes, it's perfectly reasonable to criticize religion, nobody's saying it isn't. But it's not logical or rational to imply that the religious head of the Catholic church is doing something in the least bit unusual or questionable in defrocking an apostate Bishop.
Of course I also realize that the whole thread is nothing more than a convenient vehicle for Catholic-bashing, which is a common pastime of religious-zealot Atheist anti-Catholic nitwits who can't mind their own business.
So, carry on...

BTW Seth... I love how you cite the protestant movement as the response men of faith give to problems with the church...
From what I've" seen of the history of christian sects over the last 5 centuries, the "solution" ended up being a lot worse than the problem... when you see people like JW and mormons and born agains and pentecostals all claiming to be better at chretinity than catholics, I don't know whether to guffaw or sob.

IIRC, there is a verse in the Bible somewhere about only having family men running the church...
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

'cept the catholic church does have married priests - so not a matter of dogma. Married RC priests are what you get when married priests in other sects (eg Lutherans, Church of England) decide to join the RCs and are accepted.

I think they were just throwing out a lot of shit and hoping some would stick. No different to what astrologers and fortune tellers do. except that married clergy are NOT the rule, or anything that is considered as desirable standard practice. Those folk are accepted because one does not want to discourage conversions, or to take away their clergy status when said status is likely a pivotal point on whether they'll convert or not... but you won't see the church accepting converts from protestant denoms who were not pastors before conversion to become clergy while married with a living spouse, or married catholic men entering seminary.llanyb wrote:'cept the catholic church does have married priests - so not a matter of dogma.
