They have been exposed to the world enough and are intelligent enough to understand how much of it is bullshit but are clinging to the parts they think are valuable and focus on love and redemption. I know because I was one of em and so were lots of people I know. Really, these are not the people you need to be worrying about :dono:
Exactly!

Many of my work colleagues fall into this category (as left-leaning liberal catholics) They detest the current pope and much of the hierarchy, have progressive views in most areas, but still have that weird faith thing. I don't understand why they cling to the woo, but in most respects I can happily work and interact with them.
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?

Clinging to woo .. okay that takes a while to finally overcome .. but clinging to the institution and considering themselves 'catholics'? Why?

"Woo" without a label doesn't last very long.
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."

Most people never stop to think about it. They're just catholics born and bred, and they have faith in god, so they stay part of the church. I expect they also see the current 'manager' as a bit crap, but stick to their team just like a football supporter would.

The candles?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Culture .. and fear? Catholicism has some very insidious methods of indoctrination, creating fear and aversion through perverted notions of morality and threats of afterlife damnation.
