I'm a 98% atheist - maybe even 99%. I have the a sliver of room for the possibility that actually there may be some universal unknowable 'entity' ..not even sure if that is the right word..that is beyond everything we can know or understand as humans.

Whenever I consider that possibility I do however rapidly realise that even if there is, it is not something who would want us to chop of the ends of boys' willies, sing songs about how wonderful it is, or actually be all that bothered about humans at all at the end of the day, what with things like Betelgeuse, Mu Cephei, Cephei A and Canis Majoris to think about. (Stars literally millions of times larger than the sun).

Atheists should have doubts! We don't KNOW the truth, we just have a better grip on reality than the folks who love the Great Sky Fairy. But we don't know for certain.

But you can know for certain that you have a reasonable uncertainty and just get on with your life in the knowledge that god is highly unlikely.

Like Rum(?) said, we can go 99% with no problems. It's the 100%ers that should be reviewing their estimate of the situation.

Yeah. 99% was pretty much how Dawkins put it in that otherwise worthless work, TGD.

I am pretty sure, about 100%, that a thinking feeling acting entity does not exist without molecules. So that part I have no doubts on.

All this stuff of "emergent properties" etc. is just wishful thinking. It is what it is, DNA driving the organism to reproduce.

I think that all the gods of all the religions are made by humans. I don't think there is a creator that stands apart from the universe. But I kinda like the idea that the universe might have some innate intelligence at work. Spinoza's pantheism comes closest. But I'll never know, and that's okay.

"Pretty sure" is good, just avoid absolutism.

This is where we can go into "people speak". People are absolutely sure of a lot of things. Capitalism, socialism, global warming, skepticism. When they are locked into a way of thinking, there is no other side to the argument.

As an example, all economic systems, tribal to half the planet, work to distribute goods, trade, pay for work etc. They do not add or take away from the actual work done, they are just economics. But people will swear to only one or just ignore the issue.

Now I am beginning to have doubts. I think you were not supportive enough, Gawdzilla. I am only 99% sure now.

Oh, I'm very supportive, unlike boxer briefs. :lay:

Well OK then. My mom gave me the white underwear in 195something and if it was good enough then, I still support the idea.

As Rod Stewart so wisely said, "Don't ever let them change your point of view." (Meaning that a teenage runaway is much wiser than any adult.)
