I would say evolution is a fact. How it works is still not totally clear, but there's no serious doubt it's working.

“Most theories cannot ever be transformed into fact. No amount of facts supporting such theories makes this so. Remember, a theory is a general statement intended to explain facts. For example, the ancient peoples noticed peculiar points of light that wandered amongst their background. We now know these to be the planets. They wandered because they, like the Earth, were orbiting around the sun, each at different speeds, different distances from the Sun. Nicolaus Copernicus is generally considered to be the first to propose this, and support his theory with hard evidence, but ancient cultures stumbled upon this through speculation. We now consider this a fact because we have sent many craft to these planets and can predict their motions to a very high precision. Of course, our predictions come from the theory (and the laws underlying it).”

I am not here, then, as the accused; I am here as the accuser of capitalism dripping with blood from head to foot.”

The theory of evolution is still under study.
The fact of evolution is well established.

Evolution has been observed in action under laboratory conditions, therefore is a fact.

Of course, the support for evolution not only goes beyond the mundanities of Lenski's experiments on E.coli, but extends to cladogenesis and speciation too, and this, in effect, confirms the ultimate predicted output of evolutionary processes acting on the biosphere...the origin of new species by divergence from ancestral ones.

A theory in Science explains facts.

“Theory” in Science: A theory is really one of the pinnacles of science – what nearly everyone strives to make out of their hypotheses. A hypothesis is elevated to a theory when it has withstood all attempts to falsify it. Experiment after experiment has shown it sufficient to explain all observations that it encompasses. In other words, a “theory” has never been shown to be false, despite – usually – hundreds if not thousands of separate attempts to break it. It explains the observations with one or more mechanisms and, because it provides that mechanism, it is considered to be above the level of a Law. Examples these days are the Theory of Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, the Germ Theory of Disease, and yes, the Theory of Evolution.”

You were correct and I was wrong. I found this post on RDF and it hits the nail; on the head as far as I’m concerned. :td: :td:

I tend to say that evolution is fact and that natural selection is the theory which explains it. I usually say that when Darwin proposed natural selection it was a hypothesis, upon being tested and passing the tests it graduated to theory. Evolution is an observable phenomenon, its presence is not disputed by any on valid scientific grounds, natural selection on the other hand is a different matter entirely.

I happen to agree that natural selection is the primary driver of evolution, but such is a theory that is falsifiable, evolution itself is not.

Wow...yikes! I haven't read that book, though I have read similar ones like it all my life. I'm going to try and find a free copy around so I can skim through it before I comment.

Why would anyone bother to read some transcript of some eloquent but long winded fundy sermon because IMHO that is about all that book amounts to.
Just because more people believe Jesus is the son of God and not the son of Satan does not make it any truer.

I want to give this thing a proper, detailed review. But unlike anything I've ever read, it actually gives me the sensation of my skin crawling when I read it. I feel on edge and like I want to fidget and scream. It's so wrong, on so many levels - all at the same time. The author should be euthanised, partly for his utter stupidity and blindness, partly for his willful misrepresentation of the facts and partly just as a service to humanity. If I decided to list the individual issues I have with it, I'd run foul of the max characters limit on posts here, and I'd probably start crying or breaking things.

I will try to give it a critique one day soon, but I need to put it away for a while to forget how truly bad it is.
Features something Mayan calendar-like. Totally convinced; count me in on the whole fiction thing!

The worst thing is, once you wade your way through the disaster that it is and get to the crux of the conclusion, it becomes clear that it's all about fear. The author is shit-scared of nihilism because he thinks without meaning and purpose to life, there can be no beauty, morality, love, etc.

I've gotten that a lot from believers and such. They seem to think a materialist worldview sucks all the humanity out of life, for some reason. Same for the cartesian dualists/pluralists in the humanities departments. Their loss, really.
