catholic abuse row is like anti-semitism!
Re: catholic abuse row is like anti-semitism!
What really puzzles me is how such an antiquated, benighted, and backward institution such as the Roman Catholic Church has managed to survive and even thrive in the 21st century. Consider its track record: its opposition to Galileo and Darwin, censorship (as manifested, for instance, in its “index librorum prohibitorum”), its opposition to the use of condoms in Africa where AIDS is widespread, and of course all the allegations of sexual abuse at the hands of its priests. Why would anyone want to be associated with such a vile institution?

Re: catholic abuse row is like anti-semitism!
I know many catholics (of the liberal wing of the church), most of whom are pissed off about most of the crap coming from the conservative hierarchy. They think the current Pope is a nasty right-wing old prick, they are reasonably comfortable about gays, contraception, the possibility of married and/or female priests. But they still retain a powerful emotional connection to catholicism, its rituals, and the community feel of their local parish. I really don't get it, but I can see their real attachment...Epictetus wrote:What really puzzles me is how such an antiquated, benighted, and backward institution such as the Roman Catholic Church has managed to survive and even thrive in the 21st century. They just don't get it. They have institutionalized the raping of children and been complicit in the crimes, covering their tracks and protecting the abusers, supporting the rapists. And yet somehow, everyone else has got it in for them... The hubris is beyond believable!!!
It's a piece of piss to be cowiz, but it's not cowiz to be a piece of piss. Or something like that.

I saw this headline yesterday, but I was in a rush and didn't have time to read the story. I thought it must be that they were comparing the boys who were molested (the real victims, after all) to the Jews. Silly me.
I think that language has a lot to do with interfering in our relationship to direct experience. A simple thing like metaphor will allows you to go to a place and say 'this is like that'. Well, this isn't like that. This is like this.

They're digging the hole deeper.

Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.

It's funny... you'd think that an organisation with almost 2000 years experience of lying and cover-ups could handle this sort of thing so much more smoothly...Faithfree wrote:They're digging the hole deeper.

Good way to try to deflect attention away from the real issue, which obviously isn't anti-Semitism, but rather the fact that for decades the Catholic Church has, in various ways, sought to cover up acts of sexual abuse perpetrated by a number of its own priests.AshtonBlack wrote:And the predicted backlash begins.....

Before it even speaks of anti-Semitism I think it behooves the Church to first eliminate the pederasts from its own ranks. "First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye" (though I think anti-Semitism is pretty ugly and much more than a mere "speck").
