I see little difference, if any. If I think something is true, then I believe it. However, I suppose the "believe" word might connote faith, as in "reasonless" belief, and "think" tends to imply that someone actually reasoned....Robert_S wrote:For some people there's a difference between "believe" and "think it is true".

Coitu...I mean coito...
Ok, what I believe in is a creator, although not a creator-out-of-nothing, as is traditionally thought of as being a creator. What I believe in is a manifestor, ie the universe is a manifestation of a conscious manifestor. So, what I beliebve in is both a "creator" and conscious. Surely that counts as a god, doesn't it? If not, I don't mind, but I call it god, because I can't think of anything else to call it. You do realise that within christianity, islam and other religions, there are panentheistic traditions too.

It's a piece of piss to be cowiz, but it's not cowiz to be a piece of piss. Or something like that.

Does say, Karen Armstrong think there really exists a god in any sense that is relevant to anything in the universe except on an emotional level?Coito ergo sum wrote:I see little difference, if any. What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I speak a very rare dialect of wibble. I doubt you'll find any trustworthy translation. Sorry.pawiz wrote:Can anyone translate wibble? Babelfish seems not to work on this.Chuck Jones wrote:Coitu...I mean coito...

So let them be happy in their woo. You never know, they might help you out if you're in a spot of bother. Just be nice to people, regardless of their beliefs.Feck wrote:Kabbalists and Gnostics it's still a bunch of hippy Woo even if it does have some history .

I don't remember if I answered yet. Them godpeople are confused. They confuse feelings with god. They have too many feelings. Some pills might help.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

Coming into the discussion late, as far as the OP goes, they are only stupid insofar as they have fallen prey to the inherent leanings of the human mind to see patterns where none exist. Which I wouldn't call stupid, merely ignorant of the facts.
I was watching the debate last night at La Ciudad de las Ideas between Hitch / Harris / Dennett and Boteach / D'Souza / Taleb and predictably Dinesh D'Souza's ridiculous reasoning that there is evidence for God, or the afterlife in the case of that particular discussion, is based on sheer ignorance of the reality of the universe and a complete misunderstanding of how science views that evidence and, by extension, the universe.

Theists know stuff that you don't. You're ignorant, theists are clever. You shut up now.dj357 wrote:Coming into the discussion late, as far as the OP goes, they are only stupid insofar as they have fallen prey to the inherent leanings of the human mind to see patterns where none exist.
