Teachings of Jesus re-examined by University of Lincoln psychologist
JESUS is put under a microscope in a book that looks at his teachings in the light of modern psychotherapy.
Clinical psychologist Roger Bretherton of the University Oof Lincoln has re-examined the teachings of Jesus by looking at eight well-known Bible passages.
He explores the psychological underpinnings of traits taught in them, such as forgiveness, generosity and self-belief.
Dr Bretherton, who specialises in helping people who have been in car crashes, was interested to explore how these traits, whether approached from a religious or non-religious point of view can improve people's recovery rates and opinions of themselves and the world around them.
He wrote The God Lab after developing the idea from his research into existential psychotherapy – how people find meaning in life and attach significance to life-changing events, such as bereavement.
It also looks at how people think about spirituality compared to how they think about religion.
Dr Bretherton said: "It is really a personal exploration, rather than an academic source. I am religious, but I spend a lot of time questioning why that is.
"I think people who aren't religious are sometimes curious about it and those who are sometimes question it, so this book looks at things from both those angles.
