I was...
Ah, nevermind.
Ah, nevermind.

I know what you meant, we should find everybody who needs to know they're not alone in not believing. I just added my personal experience to that. The Mad Hatter wrote:I was...

Actually, what I was saying was that approaching people under a specific category of 'atheism' ie 'minority atheist' is a little demeaning.

Okay, and my experience is they will resist being pigeonholed that way in any case. The Mad Hatter wrote:Actually, what I was saying was that approaching people under a specific category of 'atheism' ie 'minority atheist' is a little demeaning.

Minority can include disabled people. I'm not looking for away to pigeonhole these people for any purpose other than asking "is there something us white middle class (that's me btw) can do to be a group where non-white non-middleclass non-abled atheists would want to come?"The Mad Hatter wrote:Actually, what I was saying was that approaching people under a specific category of 'atheism' ie 'minority atheist' is a little demeaning.
Conversely, is there something we are doing that is unintentionally excluding them?
I want to be clear that I'm not saying they can't figure this out for themselves or anything. But I'd prefer more of a mixed culture than I normally see at my local skeptics meet and I want to investigate.
Posting your experience is useful, Gawd. But this is a new topic for me so it might take me a couple tries to make sure that I've filed your experience away correctly.

There's a black guy on youtube, some 'gangsta' atheist rapper or some shit. Ask him.

I think we should point out that geographical areas that have more religiosity have higher crime, poverty and teenage pregnancy regardless of race or ethnicity. Apart from that, just getting the schools in minority neighborhoods up to par and keeping racial prejudice out of the classroom would help equalize the chances for minorities to break the shackles.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
