I think it is still illegal to deface cash in the UK, but nothing happened to The KLF when they burnt a million quid.
At least I'm housebroken.

I don't know specifically about paper money, but I know the law that made defacing coins illegal was repealed in the 80s. Those machines you get for pressing a design into pennies in museums and other attractions are always labelled with info about the repeal.

Now that you mention it there may have been something legalise about a machine I used in liverpool to make a Beatle coiny thing, still, can't see anyone doing hard time over a penny guv'.

Unfortunately, while stores will generally accept mildly defaced cash, they will usually not accept mutilated bills.

I remember reading that torn bills were legal tender as long as the serial number was intact.
