If the preacher said that the local body builders were witches, nobody would believe him (because they'd be frightened of retaliation).
But when the preacher says that children are witches, well that changes everything. You can beat the shit out of children and they are too small to fight back...so yeah, they must be witches...let's go out and kill a few of the little bastards.
