They still haven't found any of the original Gospels - just numerous copies (and fragments of) that were created long after both the events themselves and the originals were written (which themselves were not contemperaneous notes).....therefore the stuff that got into the King James etc versions is not accurate (from error and editing / re-writing). I am ignoring the fact that the 4 NT gospels are only some of the gospels and were also not written by those they are named after.....

I was in the CBSI (Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland). I don't remember the religious part at all. I remember a priest used t o hang around with us. I'm not sure if he was even meant to be there :ask:

I was six days old when I was on my first scout outing in the woods, and continued till I was in my twenties. My group consisted of mostly atheists and atheistic minded people, although one of my friends from that time became a priest, to my great surprise. Both my girls are scouts, and obviously their group doesn't have too much of a religious agenda.

The variation is huge, even within Finland there are groups with a strong religious agenda and groups where religion is no issue at all, or even a disturbing element. I believe international differences can be even bigger.

But as Tero pointed out, the Scout oath in Finland still has the "I will love my God..." in it. I hated that when I was a kid, but once someone pointed out that I can freely define what "my God" is, I started thinking "scientific world view", and managed. But I still would like to get a version of that, that would suit atheists better.

In France, there are all flavors, but mostly churchy ones... I don't know if we have atheist friendly groups... if there are, they are a small minority amid the religious bands, and hard to find...

I don't like that "interpret god to mean whatever you like", because to my mind, it creates the space to perpetuate the myth, and hence the unwarranted interference in society.

It's the same trick the AA and other 12 step groups use to lure unbelievers into their nets and toward religion....
