Actually, papal infallibility, as commonly understood, is a myth. The pope's edicts are only infallible if issued ex cathedra, literally "from the chair," the chair being the office of the pope and not a physical chair. In the entire history of the church, this power has only been exercised a handful of times, most notably in setting out the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. (Many sources list only two infallible points of dogma resulting from ex cathedra proclamations, but the matter isn't entirely clear. Wikipedia lists four.)
