The "real Christians" came out with their fangs bared. This is the part that disgusts me the most about their hypocrisy. They don't believe in their god any more than I do, not the vast majority of them, they go to church because they're supposed to, and the rest of the week they're almost normal. But they will be as hateful as they can be if they feel their little deity is threatened, because it would mean they would have to think about it.

It's a revealing story.
It really shows how strong the sense of belonging is in churches, both by what she's missing, and by the fact that she went straight to atheist groups for support.

I do think that she didn't handle it well though. I would have told the people who had been paying me first, and broke it more gradually. They deserve better treatment. Maybe just say that you're experiencing doubts, and feel unable to preach, then people would accept that, and not dump you as a friend.

It was a bit naive to announce it at a big atheist meeting, and expect that it wouldn't hit the headlines.
I can see why her employer and congregation would feel dumped on..

You know what... with bad luck, I might be in her place, being a Catholic priest, and sinning with my lady parishioners and coming late to the understanding that I've built my life on a lie... of course, my life has been built on lies anyway (that a university education was the key to getting a good job, that you could get up in the public service even if you entered it at the very bottom... I did everything like I was supposed to, and life fucked me over and went bohica anyway)

I haven't heard that. Although it wouldn't surprise me, if the pack were starving.
But in other times, I think it would be highly unlikely.
