The Gospels by now are just comical to me, but I never did figure out what use the Paulian texts were, to anyone.

The Pauline texts are critical for settling certain controversial issues in the early church, probably the most important of which were the requirements for a gentile to enter the faith and questions of antinomianism and the relative importance of faith and works. (Though Jesus kinda settled that score in John, wherein he schooled Thomas for his doubts — though since that section is somewhat troublesome for apologetics, you'll find its meaning frequently watered down into nothingness.)

I'm unfamiliar with that work. I rather like Ehrman, but he's a lightening rod for the idiocy of fundamentalists — probably dating back to his Misquoting Jesus whose title was, essentially, a marketing decision by his publisher to give the book a higher profile. There is nothing in Misquoting Jesus which would give even a conservative biblical scholar pause if it weren't for that title. Misquoting Jesus is about as gentle and non-partisan an introduction to higher and lower criticism as you can find. And when Metzger chose Ehrman to assist him in revising his classic book on the New Testament, well all of a sudden the world was going to hell in a handbasket, whether the person had even read either the old or new edition.

I am so relieved he is not real, as he hated women so much. It was OK to be gay, but this religion thing made "him" weird.
