Re: Load of bollocks
It's also a bit arrogant (remember "The Brights"? heheheheheh) and I'd say outside some people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders we are only temporarily rational, it is not a default setting and more than "angry" or "contemplative" are. Being rational is a mental state, one of many we use day in day out, often in spite of our claims of rationality. so I'd say that's out. I thought Godless was okay but like the religious concept of "atheism" "godlessness" also has a whole set of presumptions attached.
But as was pointed out. It's a pointless task to define someone by a thing they do not accept or believe in. If people want to label me an atheist, fine as long as they do not think I belong to some homogenous ideological group under the label "atheism."

It's simpler to be an anti-theist I don't have to get involved in argument about the existence of sky fairys if I don't feel like playing with the twatish excuses they have . I Just Don't Like Theists ( I would like to say I just don't like religion but every time I do some twat opens his rancid mouth and says"oh but my belief isn't a religion it's personal covenant with god " and gives me that shit- eating grin the faithful all have and I want to punch them in the throat ) .

Re: Load of bollocks
Actually, as I argued on another forum, the word for them is 'skeptics', and they have a lot in common with atheists -- not having yet attended TAM, I can't vouchsafe personally, but both the similarity and the overlap is astounding. More than that, I would suggest that atheist is as much a social identity as a description of beliefs, indeed, the best scholarship in biblical archaeology seems to indicate that for the early Jew, being other than the lot of Baal worshippers was as important as being a Yahweh man -- in our modern era, the notion of Jew as religious, social and ethnic identity slips readily from one to another pole without stopping. Was Jefferson a freethinker as we think of them? Likely not. And was Huxley's agnosticism a reaction to theist suppositions or a position in its own right? We are social animals, and the social defines us, as much, if not more, than any "true self" consisting of some amalgam of what we consider our 'core beliefs'. (Indeed, I'm struck by how people pick out different aspects of religious definitions, in part, because of their positive apprehensions, but also in as much as they can fit them into whatever happens to be their current idiom of psychological dogma. As an eliminative materialist, and one who has immense contempt for folk psychologisms, I see these lawyering maneuverings -- pettifoggery in Seth's vernacular -- as little more than attempts to erect a serviceable structure out of the current, yet transient, cosmogony of psychologisms.)Ian wrote:A word that doesn't need to exist.Audley Strange wrote:What's atheism?
What do we call people who don't believe in astrology? Or those who deny the existence of fairies? Don't have a word for them...

What disorder are you talking about? Social? Or some mysterious energy in the brain? What? You don't have to be precise, just tell us what you mean.Audley Strange wrote:It's also a bit arrogant (remember "The Brights"? heheheheheh) and I'd say outside some people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders
