Homeschooling: German Family Gets Political Asylum in U.S.

Post by Valden » Tue Mar 02, 2010 9:58 pm

The Romeikes are not your typical asylum seekers. They did not come to the U.S. to flee war or despotism in their native land. No, these music teachers left Germany because they didn't like what their children were learning in public school - and because homeschooling is illegal there. (See pictures of a Tennessee family homeschooling its children.)

"It's our fundamental right to decide how we want to teach our children," says Uwe Romeike, an Evangelical Christian and a concert pianist who sold his treasured Steinway to help pay for the move.

Fuck 'em, I hope they get sent back.

Translation: It's not about "how" we want to teach our children, but "what" we teach them.
"Whether it's a state school or a private school, there's still a curriculum that is forced onto children," says Kuhnle.
Translation: We want to enforce our own religious curriculum onto our kids.

The children are the real victims. Their parents want to stop them from receiving proper, well-rounded education. :ddpan:

I don't see how it could possibly be the parents right to stop their children from learning about things which may conflict with their religious beliefs. The parents may speak of their own rights but what about the rights of their children to a good education?

I also fail to see why these parents qualify for asylum seeing as the only possible reason given was that groups who have a well founded fear of persecution are entitled to asylum, I cannot see how they arebeing persecuted simply because they cannot homeschool their children, especially when it appears such a law applies to all groups equally.
