POLL: Gauging public opinion for AV

Post by The Red Fox » Sun Feb 21, 2010 2:47 pm

I've posted this at RDF, but I'd also like to ask the folks here.

For those who missed this piece of news a few weeks ago http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8492272.stm Gordon Brown wants to implement the AV system. Personally, I'm against it. If we're going to reform the political system, and these chances come along once every few centuries in this country, we should do it properly and go for a fully proportional system.

Disclaimer: I'm going to use the poll results in a research project for college on the subject of PR. I'm not going to be using usernames or comments, just the poll results.

I really don't think AV is a significant improvement and I'd much rather see a Single Transferable Vote system. IMO, it's a waste of money setting up the necessary referendum about a system that people either won't understand or will realise makes little difference.

About me: If I had my way I'd buy a few acres of land and an old tractor. I'd drive the old tractor around the land and passers-by would stop to ask me what kind of crop I was farming. "Crop?" I'd say, "Crops are work, I'm planting ideas."

Well, at least do something over there...then maybe we can accomplish something here in Canada.

Is it wrong to look at the list of countries we share a system with a make a judgement from that? It seems like any half-decent country (no offence Canada and America) uses one of the two main versions of proportional representation.
