Powerful 7.3 quake rocks Haiti, sparks tsunami alert

Post by Xamonas Chegwé » Tue Jan 12, 2010 11:05 pm

Just saw this on the news. There has been a massive quake just 14 miles from Port-au-Prince. 7.3, that close to a major population centre, in a dirt-poor country with poorly constructed buildings spells disaster. :(

The damage is going to be horrendous, I'm sure. :(

But on a slightly different note... from comments on CNN about the quake:
For those of you who have put this ... This is not the time to remind that HAITI IS THE POOREST COUNTRY IN AMERICA ... that's only in ya mind, ya should go visit Haiti one day... I' m From Haiti and very proud ! This is the time to keep them with ya prayer !

Yeah, trust me, this is one place that would be better off washed off the map. Maybe some will float alive to the relative paradise we call Cuba.

Yeah, well I think I'll trust my Haitian friend when they say that it wouldn't be better off washed off the map. :ddpan:

"19 Australians"

That seems to be a rather important point to make here (In this country on the news).
19 Australians, without serious injury. Not a single fatality.
And for some reason it's important enough to repeat both while reporting the original news and then doing another segment on them alone.
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."

I cry for this poor country. No food, no water, no medical care...

I have a friend in the Secular Chat that is from Port Au Prince. :(

A friend of mine gave me some figures... Great Britain sent 64 men, the US 3 teams and an aircraft carrier, France 130 men, Italy can't remember how many, Canada 2 helicopters, even Cuba and Venezuela are sending people, various countries have already spent millions of euros... Vatican, your turn.
Is there for honest poverty
That hangs his heid and a' that
The coward slave, we pass him by
We dare be puir for a' that.
