American Marine Corps

Post by Dory » Fri Jan 08, 2010 8:11 pm

I've noticed in the US military there's a huge thing about the Marine Corps. I'm a bit confused why the stress on NAVAL soldiers as opposed to field/air soldiers. It seems as though they're the most embellished, elite soldiers, and so many recruiting TV ads are advertising just the Marine Corp. I still don't get why the focus on that Corps and seafare in America... for instance, what about the United States Army Air Forces? That doesn't get half the publicity.

Because ... because ... because ... they're the Marine Corps of course! :ddpan:

It hasn't been that since 1947! :cranky:

The U.S. Army Air Force probably doesn't get much publicity since it was disbanded in September of 1947.

Edit: Kev beat me to it.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

No, they're not the elite soldiers. That's Delta-force. The Marines are just Marines. War machines.

Boy, try saying that to a Marine! It's been nice knowing you. :hehe:

Part of it is self-perpetuating. The Marines think they're the best, they say they're the best, and they make more of an effort to be the the best. "The Marine Corps" is also much easier to identify with than Delta Force or (say) the Airborne divisions.

I'd be a bit disappointed if he wasn't, TBH.

I once had Delta Force invite me to their "special forces only" beer tent, just for being British. ;) The US Marines were not allowed in their "bar".

Aren't the Navy Seals the elite force of the seas?

The navy and the marines dont really like each other from what I can remember.
A good friend of my family is a marine and he is an idiot. Mainly for joining the marines. Luckily after getting back from Iraq he was too mentally unstable to be re-deployed so he is safe until his contract is up!!
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

In terms of man for man infantry skills, and personal bravery there are few to compare to, because in most nations the equivalent level of competence is usually much smaller. For example the Para Regiments or the Royal Marines and Royal Marine Commandos who are their direct comparison. They are a LOT of very well trained men, with a shit load of firepower. However, notice I said infantry skills. For Spec ops, the SAS/SBS still kick arse harder than Delta, any day! :Erasb:
