Why oh why do these countries introduce foreign species of animal without checking. Just crazy.

Killing machines: humble British hedgehog causes havoc in New Zealand
Brought over by British settlers to make themselves feel more at home, the diminutive mammals are thriving - which spells doom for native wildlife

Consider the hedgehog. Tiny, rotund, bright-eyed and snuffling, they are shampooed for internet videos, fed saucers of milk by children, and have been immortalised by Beatrix Potter’s Mrs Tiggy Winkle. Of all the nocturnal mammals one may encounter poking through the backyard at night, they are surely the most beloved.

But in New Zealand, these small, trundling, spiky creatures are killing machines.

New Zealand is a hedgehog paradise. Whereas in Europe they are hunted by pine martens, foxes and badgers, New Zealand’s hedgehogs have few predators. Unchecked by the food chain, they meander blissfully through forests and gardens, hoovering up an astonishing number of native creatures.
Australian spider that crushes its prey among species taking hold in New Zealand
Little humped spider usually found in Sydney is now thriving in Christchurch and is just one of dozens of invasive spider species

An Australian spider that crushes its prey in a tightly spun web is one of dozens of new trans-Tasman arrivals making itself at home in New Zealand, where it has few predators and often lives completely undetected.

The Philoponella congregabilis, sometimes called the little humped spider, is usually found in Sydney and along the east coast of Australia, but has recently been tracked to the South Island city of Christchurch, where it is thriving.

New Zealand town where Easter is all about wiping out bunnies
Thousands of vermin that plague farms are culled in annual Great Easter Bunny Hunt centred on Alexandra, Central Otago

New Zealand hunters have celebrated a return to tradition this Easter: shooting thousands of rabbits, an introduced species that threatens the country’s biodiversity as well as agriculture.

The Great Easter Bunny Hunt – where hundreds of hunters gather in Alexandra, Central Otago, to make a dent in the regional rabbit population – was held this weekend for the first time since 2017.

The Alexandra Lions club has organised the event for more than 25 years as both a fundraiser for community projects and a show of support for local farmers whose lands are blighted by rabbits as agricultural pests.

It was also eagerly anticipated as a social event, said long-time convenor Dave Ramsay, with 25 teams of 12 shooters travelling from all over the country to take part this weekend. “It’s something they look forward to from year to year.

Shooting bunnies was something I enjoyed, back in the day...

But yeah, introduced animals are a fucking curse...

Remember that most of the introductions in both Oz and NZ happened in the 19th Century, by enthusiastic amateur societies wanting to bring interesting new animals (mostly, but not always, from Britain) to the colonies. The science of ecology was non-existent, so no-one thought of the possible consequences. The cane toad thing in Queensland was later, and probably deserves more censure...

We've got the fucking cane toad bastards now too. I haven't seen any around here, but they're in the area. Some fucking idiots brought them over here as fucking PETS, and then set them free. We're fucking overrun with invasive species, pythons, boas, all kinds of lizards, tree frogs, cane toads, walking catfish, snakeheads, Asian carp, lion fish - almost ALL because some fucking idiot brought them here as fucking pets. I despise humans, extinction is too good for us.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

A toad as a pet? Have you seen them? I did in Queensland. They are horrible and slimy. My wife's cousin would find four or five every evening in the garden. They had a special freezer for them. The best way to kill them apparently. They are not small.
