Old wikipedia article...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_power_in_Texas
Future developments
An energy storage system is being developed for West Texas. The system allows excess wind energy to be stored, making wind energy more predictable and less variable.[41] This 36 MW battery facility became operational in December 2012
tl:dr if they didn't have batteries, they could only run stuff while the wind was blowing. I don't explain it well, but you have to have them in a 'renewable' system, and while you don't HAVE to mine the stuff in a far away country you don't mind ruining, you do have to perform a bunch of ruinous mining to get it.

We'll have wind and nuclear. The nuclear is adjustable.

The batteries perform predictably poorly as temperatures drop.
Image

but it is the more complex relationship that probably fucked them. As temperature drops, mechanical demand on battery increases. Part of this is thicker oil, part is machinery which fits differently when chilled, and there are a lot of factors I don't know.

Does this apply to lithium batteries, which I assume are what's used in grid backups? They certainly are in Australia.

Yes lithium batteries are affected by cold. Normally instant spin up gas turbines are peak demand main backup but in Texas they were not built for cold, even the thermal plants had cold weather failures.

Lithium is an expensive approach to grid backup.

The calculations can be looked up, but yes. It isn't just the batteries though. Those charts are accurate enough, but considering the chain of difficulties a wash of brutal cold can make, it's tough to get on top of.

They likely know just what's wrong, but in short, my bet is that it simply isn't worth being better at it. Everything about working in the extreme cold is more expensive, but that's just my experience. And every contractor I know exerts their skills in that area, spending less to get the job done. It's a lively and valuable skill set here, and Texas probably has more problems with wild hogs than frost heaving.

Black Swan events by nature are near impossible to guard against ( think Fukashima ) as building infrastructure to cover extremely low % events would never be viable.

That said, both for Fukashima and Texas the operators did not follow the existing rules and make the repairs/upgrades those doing the oversight recommended.
Overall world wide the nuclear industry has an exemplary record of safety but perhaps at the cost of pricing itself out of the market.

Texas points out the foolishness of relying on market forces in critical infrastructure. :banghead:

Er, no. Wind energy is never stored. Nor is any other. Mr Tesla hasn't marketed any batteries for homes either.
This was meant for US power. We've bought the cheapest of everything. Solar power is used in our county mostly in summer, when AC runs up power use. The coal and gas (less storage, more pipes) guarantees power in winter, with the average still coming out over 50% fossil fuel. As we are a state with less than 2 million people, we also buy and sell power to a grid covering some 15-20 states.

green energy is socialism
RICK PERRY SUGGESTS TEXANS VOLUNTARILY GO WITHOUT HEAT TO FEND OFF SCOURGE OF SOCIALISM

In times of crisis, people typically look for strong, pragmatic leaders who will allay their fears while being straight with them and work around the clock to solve the problem at hand. Usually—not in all cases but in most of them—people aren’t interested in seeing elected officials go on TV or the internet and blame others for the situation they‘re in, but rather use what precious time they have to figure out how to fix things. Like, say your state was in the midst of a massive power outage, and millions of people didn‘t have heat while frigid weather refused to let up. You’d probably want your local leaders to work on restoring power before you froze to death, rather than going on Fox News to blame socialist policies that don’t exist for the situation, right? Unfortunately for the people of Texas, they’re stuck with politicians like Greg Abbott, Ted Cruz, and Dan Crenshaw, who think a visit to Sean Hannity, or some tweets about the perils of socialism, are just what the doctor ordered.

A bounty on senate impeachments. Bring a suit, if successful, a crowdfunded reward to you.

I'll put three bucks in to impeach any senator, and up to five for a 'favourite'.

I think something like the stonks revolution could make those in the senate fearfully discharging their duties, instead of proudly braying on TV and social media.

Shelves are empty here and most of the city is under an order to boil their water.

I heard Cruz is vacationing in Cancun.
