In the specific case of Bannon's threat to overthrow the election, I stand by my quote. Simply, it ain't going to happen...

Having said that, I do not discount the future threat of the extreme right in the US. They can ride an anti-Biden, anti-democrat tide in '22, and hope for a Trump (or similar) president in '24. Failing that, they may well plunge the US into violence and division, with China and Russia rubbing their hands with glee...

Trumpist redhats are harassing and hounding election officials out of office across the country, and the Republican Party is setting up Trumpist stooges who profess the gospel of The Stolen Election to take their place. Bannon is only presenting a melodramatic reading of what is indeed taking place. The anti-Biden, anti-democratic tide could very well sweep through with the assistance of people who will happily throw out thousands of votes for contrived reasons if they're marked for the wrong party. Election integrity will win the day!

You're confusing me. You disagree with my post in your first paragraph and agree with it in the second. What gives?

Note this: I never mentioned Bannon. He is indeed an idiot, full of sound and fury - as were the 60 or so leading protagonists of the NSDAP who met at the Bamberg conference in February 2026. My point, my only point was to argue that the attitude underlying Shakespeare's oft-quoted line is as inappropriate in regard to what is happening in the USA now as it turned out to be catastrophically wrong in Germany during the 1920s.

Under the leadership of one man the idiots become unified and organised and brought democracy crashing down by exploiting its weaknesses.

My borrowing of the quote from Shakespeare was solely about Bannon, and his absurd claim of overturning the election result, not a general dismissal of the very real threat from the extreme right in the US...

It doesn't matter if Bannon believes he can decertify the votes, or not - it's a motivational tool, an idea for disparate grouos to coalesce around, a rallying cry. They're going to take back control, impose order over chaos, reaffirm true patriotic value, make America great again, again, etc etc - the actual details are just that.

Yes, I got that, but the Nazis started off with a whole bunch of clowns like him. You need to take them seriously.

As a general rule, I take clowns with guns seriously. Bannon and the other "performers" may get the attention, but there are powerful people in Congress and elsewhere who support the authoritarian/fascistic ideas they propound. We saw them come to light with the unitary executive theories and torture rationales of the Bush 43 administration. Add the legal attack on our archaic and vulnerable Presidential election process to the ability of the Trumpists to intimidate and nullify opponents and we could have Trump or a successor for President.

Besides, didn't Hitler march into the gunfire with Erich Ludendorff in 1923, who was not what you would call a clown? We can remember his opponents laughing at him, but that and his subsequent trial made him a national figure in Germany. That was the platform from which he was able to launch his political career, and as you point out, use the system against itself.

Only that the Trump voters are pretty much the same as Trump, only more so. They harass actual immigrants where Trump just tweets.

In any proper country, Trump would've been taken to trial, and then sent to the wall.
