Big stuff (climate) and some small stuff is out. How to give voters at least something?

Sinema is assumed to oppose raising taxes. The funding that allows Biden to spend trillions. Or maybe it's just a single trillion by now:

Maybe less than a trillion
biden bag.jpg
" I believe we’ve finally reached a compromise in the form of this handy canvas tote bag, which should hold up through years of regular trips to the supermarket,” Biden told reporters in the White House briefing room as he gestured toward a screen that displayed a cotton bag featuring an illustration of a woman and text that read “Jane Austen Is My Homegirl,” an item administration sources confirmed was available from CafePress."

Speaking personally — as someone well to Biden's left who nevertheless recognizes his original, full-priced agenda as a big step forward — it's been a profoundly demoralizing seven months. Watching the party twiddle its thumbs trying to make sense of the erratic and self-contradictory garbage coming out of Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) to get something worth passing through Congress is both boring and maddening.

This is not the onion.

‘We need him to deliver’: Biden faces wrath of disappointed supporters
The US president hopes to be a transformational figure like FDR but inaction on voting rights, the climate crisis and social policy has fuelled frustration

When Joe Biden huddled with a group of historians in March, the conversation revolved around thinking big like one of his predecessors, Franklin Roosevelt, architect of the New Deal. Biden, it seemed, wanted to join him in the first rank of transformational US presidents.

Six months later, a very different gathering took place this week outside the White House gates. Five young climate activists, holding signs and sitting on folding chairs, began an indefinite hunger strike. It was a visceral expression of disgust at what they see as Biden’s willingness to think small and break his promises.

“Young people turned out in record numbers to elect him on his climate commitments,” said Nikayla Jefferson, 24, an activist helping the quietly determined hunger strikers on the edge of Lafayette Park. “But over this past month he’s almost given up. He’s not being a leader in this moment in the way that we need him to deliver.”

A growing sense of betrayal is shared by campaigners for everything from gun rights to immigration reform, from racial justice to voting rights, who saw Democrats’ governing majority as a once-in-a-generation opportunity. Instead party infighting has put Biden’s agenda in jeopardy and could result in voter disillusionment in next year’s midterm elections.

The 46th president came into office promising to attack four crises – coronavirus, climate, economy and racial justice – but has seen his approval rating sink to 42% after colliding with some harsh political and economic realities.
Old Joe just is not cutting it. It is time for him to stand aside?

Yep, the Democrats look like liars. They must hate being in charge. I bet they can't wait to give Republicans control so they can go back to blaming somebody else.

What's stopping the Biden administration acting on the climate emergency is the same thing that's stopping most western nations. Some might call it a Chumocracy, whereas others might call it the wholesale financialisation of the political process which undermines democratic institutions and accountability.

I paid 95 dollars a week ago for an eye exam. The glasses were 500 plus. Joe is working hard to send maybe 50 dollars my way. I did have an eye surgeon look at the inside of my eye snd Medicare paid for that.

CNN
Democrats have been eager to add vision, hearing and dental benefits to Medicare. But under the current negotiations, it looks like only the first two will be included in the package, with a possible "pilot" program to explore adding dental benefits, which are much costlier.
Biden called it a "reach" to include all three benefits in Medicare during a CNN town hall because of opposition from moderate Democrats, particularly West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin. Instead, he said he was working to include an $800 voucher for dental services and was still negotiating vision coverage.

People of W virginia unable to get off their ass and find work elsewhere:
CNN
A clean energy plan that has been dropped from the overall package? "Joe Manchin's argument is: 'Look, we still have coal in my state,'" explained Biden. "You're going to eliminate it eventually. We know it's going away. We know it's going to be gone, but don't rush it so fast that my people don't have anything to do."

Manchin remains hurdle on 3 big items. Entitlements and coal.

Expanding Medicaid: Many Democrats, including the senators from Georgia, want to expand coverage in Republican-led states that did not do so willingly under the Affordable Care Act. Manchin is the problem here.
Medicare benefits: The fight here has been focused on how to deal with dental benefits (the most expensive among the vision, hearing and dental coverage that is under consideration). Manchin again is not keen on this; Sanders wants it badly.
Climate: We know a topline — around $500 billion, maybe a bit more. That’s a high enough number to satisfy some in the climate hawk space. It’s not yet clear what that’ll consist of, though. The methane fee seems to be teetering somewhere between life and death thanks to (you guessed it!) Manchin.
