Re: The Coronavirus Thread
One idea about long covid is that is not really about direct damage done by the virus, but problems caused by the body's own immune response...

We're the only people wearing masks here, and it bothers the locals.

We've still got an indoor mask mandate, but there is much flouting. Everyone wears them under their noses, or even under their chins, and no body says anything.
However, there is the monkeypox to consider, neh?

Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
My wife was to give two lectures to seniors, and attend the other two classes. The primary instructor, whom she met a few days ago, was with grand kids that have covid. The class got pushed a week ahead.
When we give in person classes, we can't just switch to Zoom for a week. Some people refuse to use zoom and would demand a refund.

Said Peter...what you're requesting just isn't my bag
Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
We've come all the way from Wigan to get up and state
Our case for survival before it's too late

Turn stone to bread right away...

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
We do. It is believed that people suffering from me/cfs have that as a result from some form of previous virus infection.pErvinalia wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 12:03 pmWhat's the biological mechanism of long covid? Why don't we get long cold or long flu?
Sars:cov-2 seems to be good at triggering such responses. At my company we had some weeks ago a talk by an ophthalmologist from Erlangen in Germany. They are working on protocols to identify long covid and being able to cure it. That cure would then also apply to me/cfs.
They have been able to identify certain autoimmune antibodies present in long covid sufferers. They can also identify certain patterns in the blood vessels of the eye using the an ophthalmologyv device my company produces. And they can also identify that red blood cells have a reduced elasticity with those people.
There is an experimental drug. When people receive the drug, the autoimmune antibodies disappear, the blood cells elasticity returns and the patterns in the blood vessels in the eye disappear. And the long covid symptoms go away.
This drug is now shortly going into full clinical trials.
