The doses are measured by the number of altered viral particles they contain, and the developers decided that the standard dose would be 5 x 1010 viral particles. But for many of those arms in the UK trial—as well as everyone who got the vaccine in the Brazilian trial—publicly available trial information shows that the standard dose could be between 3.5 and 6.5 × 1010 viral particles.
1010?

Please explain this to a simple African?
all news sources and the Lancet appendix to an article quote the same number

https://www.thelancet.com/cms/10.1016/S ... d/mmc1.pdf

then, finally, in this article pdf, somewhere is the 10 to the tenth entry. If you copy and paste the superscripted number into most places, it comes out 1010. Only in Word does the superscript survive.

Actually, in Word, the paste gives you THREE options, and the third one also gives 1010.

Chief of the White House’s Operation Warp Speed, Moncef Slaoui, and others in the U.S. have expressed concern over the age group tested, saying 90% efficacy was only shown for the lowest risk group, which numbered 2,741 people below the age of 55. The group whose results displayed 62% effectiveness numbered 8,895.

It's not surprising if vaccines are less effective at old age. The immune cells needed for mRNA processing are fewer.

The Astra Zeneca vaccine differs in delivery. Have to look it up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AZD1222

AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, AZD1222 (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19) is being developed by the Oxford University and the international pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. AZD1222 is a viral-vector based vaccine, that uses a harmless virus to deliver the genetic material of a pathogen into cells, which then hopefully causes an immune response to the original pathogen. In the case of this vaccine, the genetic material of the SARS CoV-2 spike protein is modified into a weakened type of chimpanzee adenovirus, so that it doesn't infect humans.

Corona love story in local news on the tele:

A man and a woman, both in their sixties, shared a room in a covid ICU while both were intubated and in a coma. Fell in love afterwards.

___

UK govt yesterday announced the latest in a series of coronavirus measures and the Daily Mail and the Telegraph aren't happy. England has mostly been in a full 'circuit breaker' lockdown for the last two week and the new tiered system which come into force next Wednesday have placed most of the country in the top two tiers with the severest restrictions, with only the Isle of Wight, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in the lowest of the three tiers. The Mail's headline tells you everything you need to know...
Daily Mail wrote:Boris Johnson faces war with his own MPs: Anger grows as 99% of England is hit by tough new curbs and areas like this Kent village - that has just a handful of cases and NO deaths - is put into TIER 3

The Telegraph over eggs the pudding as usual...
Daily Telegraph wrote: Covid tiers chaos threatens to tear Boris Johnson's support apart
From the Conservative shires to the 'Red Wall' seats, the Prime Minister is facing a mass Tory revolt

To borrow from Boris Johnson's beloved cod Latin dictionary, he must have hoped the end of England's national lockdown would also bring an end to his "mense horribilis".

Alas for the Prime Minister, his terrible month, in which he lost his most trusted aide, got worse on Thursday when the announcement of the tiers to follow the lockdown paved the way for a blistering row that threatens to tear apart his support inside the Conservative Party and across the country.

From the Tory shires to "Red Wall" seats, the stench of a full-blown rebellion was in the air. Mr Johnson may yearn for a return to self-isolation...

The risks involved in the new vaccines are similar to autoimmune diseases, as well as the narcolepsy found in Finnish and Swedish kids with the flu Pandemrix vaccine.

the mRNA is delivered to the blood stream and reaches circulating immune cells, that then manufacture the viral protein.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RNA_vaccine

The viral like particles infect the number of cells in circulation that they can. They do not produce more virus or more of themselves. Once the vaccine is gone, the new immune cells produced in the bone marrow
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_blood_cell
do not get the vaccine induced spike protein.

The immune system has to learn to respond to this spike protein in the time that the vaccine particles are active and functional.

What's a little narcolepsy and autoimmune disease among friends? Come on, take a chance, we might let you go to the pub if you survive.

It's understood now how the narcolepsy was triggered by the swine flu vaccine.

One of the proteins of the H1N1 virus that was also part of the vaccine is similar to a protein that is used in the brain to control sleep hormones. After the vaccination, the person has antibodies against this (as well as all the other) H1N1 virus protein. But those antibodies can also react to the sleep control proteins in the brain.

Normally, there is a blood / brain barrier that prevents antibodies from entering the brain. So, all those patients had another medical condition (an injury of membranes in the brain) that was necessary to allow the antibodies to enter the brain in the first place. The same persons would also have gotten the narcolepsy if instead of getting the vaccine they would actually have contracted the real virus.

One of the great advantages of the m-RNA vaccines that are developed against Corona is that they only produce antibodies to one very specific virus protein and not to all of them, so the risk of an auto-immune reaction to the vaccine is a lot smaller than with conventional vaccine technologies.
