Well we used log tables for everything as side rules unless they huge were not so accurate. I never liked them. For normal maths we used four figured tables but in physics we used six figured tables. They were considered extremely accurate. We also had to do everything in Imperial and metric which drove you mad with the conversions.

African tables are the best log tables.

I think the UK gov has undertaken to normalise Covid-19, to treat it like a fact of life, like the weather or lottery-win sized bonuses for bankers. To this end they're offering financial inducements to get people out and about again - a combination of reducing direct state support for individuals while boosting tax breaks and subsidies for business.

In my last year at school, I did Physics, which used metric (of course) and 2 maths subjects. One was pure maths, so measurement units were irrelevant, but the other was Applied Maths, which had some overlap with Physics. It used Imperial measurements, which us kids thought was a bit stupid. I'm fairly certain that the course was created by engineers, which explains a lot...

Mind you, this is via a record number of tests (38,000). A good illustration of the Trump Principle, that when you test more, you find more new cases (he was correct). The key difference being that Trump would like a population to live in a fool's paradise of ignorance, which is why in his next breath he said he wants less testing...

A change has occurred, with the Victorian government advising the wearing of masks in public spaces (but not mandatory). Bron bought some well-made cloth ones with several layers. I wore one today for the first time when I went to the supermarket, then I washed it in very hot soapy water when I got back...

Just goes to show how easily a spark can turn into a firestorm.

Those silos for the bottom strata of society - vertical concentration camps, really - aka "public housing" you have in Melbourne





are the perfect environment for starting one. Shared laundry facilities and claustrophobically small, ill maintained elevators amplify the problem. Those towers will keep creating those sparks for years to come. Its inhabitants have always been treated badly. Now they will cop worse. Pauline Hanson has started on them already. Drug addicts. I'm surprised she has not labelled them as criminals and rapists as well while she was at it.

Sydney had similar buildings too, though on a smaller scale, but they were torn down decades ago when it was realised what a fucking disaster they were.

Yeah, they're not the best. But successive state governments of all persuasions have not put a lot of effort into better public housing, so tearing them down is not an option at the moment, as the tenants would have nowhere to go...

Only one of the blocks, with 25% Covid cases remains in hard lockdown - the rest are in the same lockdown conditions as the rest of Melbourne.
