Since they don't put much in the wages, they have to put something, don't they?

Amazon is now so massive, that they can't do this forever, as they have run through the pool of workers. As workers leave to other jobs in the recovering economy, they will be short. By next Christmas they will need to recruit every retiree willing to pack junk for them. Drivers tend to be younger people.

From the article Tero quoted:
Even so, work at an Amazon warehouse is often better than the alternative. JFK8 now pays at least $18.25 an hour [...] many blue-collar workers do not have a better option.
$18.25 an hour is significantly above the minimum wage, which ranges from $5.15 (Wyoming and Georgia) to 13.69 (Washington DC). In New york, where the JFK8 warehouse is located, the minimum wage is pegged at $12.50/hr.

given the conditions to which Amazon workers are subjected, I'd say that the extra is not enough to compensate what they are put through.

I had a Kari story going on this but scrapped it. It was too real.

Guardian:
Instead, the robots are here not to replace this lower tier of underpaid and undervalued work. They are here to smugly sit in the middle, monitoring and surveilling us, hiring and firing us. Amazon has recently replaced its middle management and human resources workers with artificial intelligence to determine when a worker has outlived their usefulness and needs to be let go.
