I still don't see what standing they have to intervene in the matter of students seeking abortions, much less that conduct having any bearing on grades.

What if the pregnancy was the result of non-consensual sex? How are these tools going to determine that before failing someone?

It seems to me they were relying on a different interpretation of the rule which allows students to miss classes because of medical procedures - they are trying to have it ruled that abortion is not a legitimate medical procedure in this context...

Assuming they are sincere it looks like mean-spiritedness. The reality is that they’ll never need to know so much about any student. So what this amounts to is declaring publicly that they sure do hate them kind of folks, boy howdy do they ever, just so, so much.

An 18-year-old woman has been charged after a newborn baby was found in a dumpster in southwest Houston on Sunday, according to police.

On Thursday, the Houston Police Department said the mother, Everilda Cux-Ajtzalam, is in the hospital and charged with abandoning a child.
I may be way off base here but I'm not sure this is something that warrants a criminal charge. Have we had this discussion elsewhere yet?

The infant is alive.

What's the legality of abortion at the moment in Texas?

There are enough cases that the practical experience is no abortion. You cannot make any exceptions for the mother. At least, none so far. The hospitals won't do them.

Maybe. We'll have to look in a couple of years. I wouldn't think so though.

On the criminal charges, it just makes more sense to me to treat this first as a medical problem. If criminal charges seem necessary after/during that then fine. But giving birth in a taco truck and putting the infant in a dumpster sounds like a medical emergency to me, and she was taken to the hospital.. :dunno:

The legal side (people ratting on pregnancy issues get a reward) needs to go through the court system. You can't have people with no standing in a case interfering with individuals. No case went to any higher court.

‘Circle of greed’: How a $1 million teacher scheme left hundreds of uncertified teachers in Texas classrooms
Robert “Boo Lee” Williams was still seething days after a popular basketball coach and two assistant principals at Houston’s first two historically Black high schools were arrested in an alleged teacher certification scheme.

“It almost got me in tears, man,” said Williams, a 1967 graduate of Jack Yates Senior High School in the city’s predominantly Black Greater Third Ward neighborhood, told CNN Friday evening. “We are fighting hard to overcome, to show that we are more than qualified. … I’m just being straight up with you.”

Prosecutors say more than 200 people paid to have someone else take the state certification exam and now are scattered in classrooms across Texas. Local and state education officials are scrambling to track down the now-certified teachers who cheated.

The Houston Independent School District employees arrested were Vincent Grayson, a longtime teacher and head basketball coach at Booker T. Washington High School, described by prosecutors as the scheme’s ringleader, along with Nicholas Newton, the school’s assistant principal and the alleged test taker who helped educators fraudulently pass hundreds of tests.

“The most important thing to me is the ringleaders have been identified and are being rooted out of our home school district … and the fact that they held positions of power there, where they were held in esteem by the children, is the very worst part of this crime,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg told reporters Monday.
