Re: American Politics from 2019 on
Biden is not showing the erratic up and down trends of bad presidents. Carter was a bit of a failure, though his diplomacy is remembered. Carter was a fix on Republicans gone badly wrong. The same may be what Biden functions as. But this time it's not temporary. Republicans have changed.
The main thrust of the party since Goldwater was to undo all of the post depression protections and social programs. This time the methods will go to extremes, as the Republican party has not carried the popular vote for a long time.
What this will result in is an interesting battle among Republicans in the 2024 primary. It may be a mess that makes the party look more chaotic than the broad range in Democrats.

...continuesNavy captain becomes 1st woman to command US nuclear carrier
The USS Abraham Lincoln deployed this week from San Diego under the command of Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt, the first woman to lead a nuclear carrier in U.S. Navy history.
Bauernschmidt, who previously served as the Abraham Lincoln’s executive officer from 2016 to 2019, took over command from Capt. Walt Slaughter during a ceremony last August, CBS 8 in San Diego reported.
The carrier deployed Monday from Naval Air Station North Island as part of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group.

Re: American Politics from 2019 on
Our legislature has a 60 day session to cash in on Biden money and then past a fetal heartbeat law and voter fraud law. I am curious about the abortion law. They of course want to ban abortion, but the dollar awards to those going to court with this "Texas law" copy will have to be paid. It may get stuck in funding. They will have to set aside some money for the vigilante justice law. That usually slows down the progress. I think it will take 2 years to get to a vote.
Then they adjourn. It is a part time job paying less than 20 000 a year. Many of the democrats in the legislature are lawyers.

Re: American Politics from 2019 on
It was an accident. Honest, Aaron Burr was just trying to help.
That's what we get for letting Congress-critters make their own rules.
How Aaron Burr may have created the filibuster by mistake
West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin III says the filibuster isn’t going anywhere, citing it as a critical tool to help small states like his. Other senators over the years, including President Joe Biden, have hailed the filibuster as a recipe from the founding fathers.
But that’s actually a myth, says Sarah Binder, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
The filibuster — and resulting rules around it — actually came about well after the writing of the Constitution and perhaps by accident, after Vice President Aaron Burr gave his 1805 farewell address.
See the video for more from Binder on how a rules cleanup may have led to the filibuster we know today.
That's what we get for letting Congress-critters make their own rules.

The house may be likely lost to trumpsters all over the country still running around. hurt losers, cause "the election was stolen."
The senate situation is this:
https://www.270towin.com/2022-senate-election/
if the Democrats get 51, all the brown ones, Biden will concentrate on judicial appointments for 2 years. Otherwise, the period Jan 2023-2024 November will be a lot of noise (election coming up) but absolutely nothing passed.

Re: American Politics from 2019 on
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/09/opin ... IjohQhj778I’ll say this for the right: They pay attention to where the power lies in the American system, in ways the left sometimes doesn’t. Bannon calls this “the precinct strategy,” and it’s working. “Suddenly, people who had never before showed interest in party politics started calling the local G.O.P. headquarters or crowding into county conventions, eager to enlist as precinct officers,” ProPublica reports. “They showed up in states Trump won and in states he lost, in deep-red rural areas, in swing-voting suburbs and in populous cities.”
The difference between those organizing at the local level to shape democracy and those raging ineffectually about democratic backsliding — myself included — remind me of the old line about war: Amateurs talk strategy; professionals talk logistics. Right now, Trumpists are talking logistics.
“We do not have one federal election,” said Amanda Litman, a co-founder of Run for Something, which helps first-time candidates learn about the offices they can contest and helps them mount their campaigns. “We have 50 state elections and then thousands of
county elections. And each of those ladder up to give us results. While Congress can write, in some ways, rules or boundaries for how elections are administered, state legislatures are making decisions about who can and can’t vote. Counties and towns are making decisions about how much money they’re spending, what technology they’re using, the rules around which candidates can participate.”
Nor is it just secretaries of state. “Voter suppression is happening at every level of government here in Georgia,” Representative Nikema Williams, who chairs the Georgia Democratic Party, told me. “We have 159 counties, and so 159 different ways boards of elections are elected and elections are carried out. So we have 159 different leaders who control election administration in the state. We’ve seen those boards restrict access by changing the number of ballot boxes. Often, our Black members on these boards are being
pushed out.”
America’s confounding political structure creates two mismatches that bedevil democracy’s would-be defenders. The first mismatch is geographic. Your country turns on elections held in Georgia and Wisconsin, and if you live in California or New York, you’re left feeling powerless.
