If there is any common trait of failed presidents, it is incapacity for growth—a
reliance on old habits and thinking even when events demand the opposite.

The coronavirus drama, with 180,000 cases, rather than the 15 at the time Trump made his “close to zero” prediction, is still closer to the beginning than the end. On Tuesday he took a much more sober tone, saying: “I want every American to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead. We’re going through a very tough two weeks.” With some lucky breaks, combined with the policy shifts he and his health team have made, he could yet retain his title as the Houdini of his era.

Without those breaks, however, he could easily end up keeping company historically with Hoover (who promised that “prosperity is around the corner”) and Lyndon B. Johnson (whose Vietnam generals fantasized about “light at the end of the tunnel”) as presidents who arrived in office with outsized personalities that shriveled as they failed to meet the political, practical, ultimately psychic needs of a nation in crisis.

Morning Joe had Republican presidential candidates Mark Sanford, Joe Walsh, and William Weld this morning to talk about Trump shutting down GOP primaries in some states. Joe Walsh called for his impeachment, and excoriated those Republicans who "want to wash Trump's feet."

"Governor Weld, you went a little bit further than just impeachment in your prior comments, and I just want to continue with that a bit," Elise Brown said.

"You said that Donald Trump has committed treason and the penalty for treason under American law is death. What's the legal framework here? Have you looked into this? How do you see this proceeding?"

While the new poll was conducted before the extension of the household isolation recommendations, it comes as other polls suggest the positive marks Trump earned for his early response to the crisis are turning more negative.

..... more respondents say they disapprove of the way Trump is handling the situation then in surveys conducted last week. That is despite Trump's previous polling bounce, as some Democratic and independent voters rallied behind him during the early days of the crisis.

In the POLITICO/Morning Consult poll, Trump’s overall approval rating is unchanged from last week: 45 percent of voters approve of the job he is doing as president, and 52 percent disapprove.

'Trump Fires Inspector General of Intelligence Community Who Handled Whistleblower Complaint That Led to Impeachment'

In a letter sent to the chairman and vice-chairman of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on Friday, President Donald Trump announced he was firing the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community, Michael Atkinson, effective in 30 days.

Atkinson, a Trump appointee who took the position in 2018, informed Congress of the whistleblower complaint about alleged improprieties during a telephone conversation between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in July 2019 that eventually led to impeachment proceedings against Trump.

Since being acquitted of impeachment charges, Trump has also fired former Ambassador Gordon Sondland and reassigned Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, both of whom testified against the president during the hearings.

"It is extremely important that we promote the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of Federal programs and activities," Trump wrote. "The Inspectors General have a critical role in the achievement of these goals. As is the case with regards to other positions where I, as President, have the power of appointment, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, it is vital that I have the fullest confidence in the appointees serving as Inspectors General."

"That is no longer the case with regard to this Inspector General," Trump added.
