Amsterdam overtakes London as Europe's top share trading centre
English capital pushed from perch, with average daily trading halving from €17.5bn to €8.6bn last month

Amsterdam has overtaken London as Europe’s largest share trading centre, and experts say the symbolic blow could be followed by the City losing jobs as well as more business owing to Brexit.

The Dutch capital, which was previously the sixth largest exchange centre in Europe, saw average daily trading surge from €2.6bn (£2.3bn) to €9.2bn in January as exchanges shifted order books abroad after Brexit.

It pushed London into second place, with average daily trading halving from €17.5bn to €8.6bn last month, according to data released by the CBOE exchange.

Under European rules that pre-date Brexit, EU shares traded in euros must be traded on EU exchanges or in countries with special “equivalence” status. After Britain failed to gain equivalence with the EU or strike a comprehensive trade deal covering financial services, exchange operators such as the CBOE and Turquoise had to move their order books abroad by January 2021.

While the figures are large, the overall impact on the City is small. Only a handful of jobs at the exchanges have had to move and the overall tax benefits to Amsterdam from a low-margin business such as trading will be minimal, according to Nick Bayley, a managing director at the consultancy Duff & Phelps.

“In terms of jobs, tax revenues, other revenues, the profit and loss accounts and so on being generated in Holland rather than in the UK, it’s marginal. But it is symbolic, of course,” Bayley said.
Of London does not accept it and says it is just technical (a load of bollocks of course).

Read the Dutch version of events:

Amsterdam is door Brexit opeens grootste in aandelen, dus ook groter dan Londen

A slightly different story. :hehe:

Dutch rampant libertarian capitalists are the best rampant libertarian capitalists. :D

I noticed that the govt mouthpiece on the radio this morning was pinning the c.10% drop in UK GDP last year wholly on the pandemic. It seems the pandemic has come along at just the right time for the Brexitarians, offering a ready-made excuse that can explain the UK social, political and economic fragility without even mentioning leaving the EU.

Just the start.

UK-US Brexit trade deal ‘could fill supermarkets with cancer-risk bacon’
Fears of illness over nitrites used in US but currently banned in Britain and EU

British stores could be flooded with “dangerous” bacon and ham from the US, marketed under misleading labels, as the result of a transatlantic trade deal, says the author of a new book based on a decade of investigation into the food industry.

The meat has been cured with nitrites extracted from vegetables, a practice not permitted by the European Commission because of evidence that it increases the risk of bowel cancer. But it is allowed in the US, where the product is often labelled as “all natural”. The powerful US meat industry is likely to insist that the export of nitrite-cured meat is a condition of a post-Brexit UK-US trade deal, which the UK government is under intense pressure to deliver.

“The American processed-meat industry acts just like big tobacco,” Guillaume Coudray, author of Who Poisoned Your Bacon Sandwich?, told the Observer. “It obscures the truth about nitro-meats and clouds the facts for its own commercial benefit – and they have been at it for decades. They have done this despite clear and overwhelming evidence that nitro-meats cause bowel cancer.”
The poor in Britain wont have much option but who cares?

Since when did any UK government take a 10 year view? All of sudden Joe Bloggs has to. Just kicking the ball into the long grass as a complete balls up has been made.

Raab shrugs off Brexit troubles, urging people to take ‘10-year view’
Foreign secretary talks up global growth opportunities and says Brussels ‘imposing obstacles’ to trade

Potential losses in UK trade with the EU because of Brexit will be more than made up by more opportunities in developing markets, Dominic Raab has claimed, saying people should take a “10-year view” of the current troubles faced by companies.

Questioned about warnings from a number of firms that bureaucracy and duties means they will go out of business, or have to relocate operations inside the EU, the foreign secretary also appeared to blame Brussels, saying it was “imposing” obstacles to trade.

Since the end of the Brexit transition period in January, with the UK’s status outside the single market and customs union, a number of firms have said their current position is untenable, with JD Sports saying last week it expected to open a major warehouse inside the EU to avoid bureaucracy over shipments to European customers.

Asked about the experience of companies facing such difficulties, Raab told BBC1’s Andrew Marr programme that the government was “doing a huge amount to support them, with advice and guidance, particularly intermediaries dealing with things like custom declarations”.

He added: “We have always been clear that there are changes that come with exiting the transition period, and what we’re trying to do is support businesses as best we can to manage those.”

He was bullish about the idea of EU financial centres taking considerable business from the City of London, despite Amsterdam having overtaken London as Europe’s top share trading centre.

Raab said: “[The EU] may be able to, if you like, nick a bit of business here or there from the City, but the problem is, the measures they will take to achieve that undermine their own competitiveness.”
A 'bit of business'. :funny: :funny: :funny:

In the fairytale land of Brexit, we’re trading with the world. It’s a fantasy
Nick Cohen wrote:The Tories – and much of the media – would have us believe we’re living in Shangri-la

In a time of bogus conspiracy theories, the only real conspiracy is the conspiracy of silence. No one should be able to deny that Britain is in an economic and political crisis brought on by Brexit. Yet the government won’t talk about it. The opposition dare not mention it. The rightwing press won’t cover it. And broadcasters fear they will be damned as biased if they admit it. Rather than face reality, we live in an imaginary Britain, a land of make-believe, where the political class act out parts as if they are on a film set.

We have the hardest of possible Brexits because the Conservative right insisted we must leave the European customs union and single market. Every promise they made to the public is turning to ashes in their mouths as a result. Take trade. Boris Johnson and Michael Gove’s Vote Leave swore to the electorate in 2016 that Brexit would free Britain to strike deals “with major economies like China and India”. It was just another in the interminable list of false pledges they made, safe in the knowledge that, by the time the truth came out, Brexit would be done. Yet, even now, they try to maintain the pretence. Last week, the Sun announced that Liz Truss, the international trade secretary, had created a post-Brexit “Enhanced Trade Partnership” with Delhi. Already it had “created” 1,540 jobs, courtesy of the Indian tech firm Tata Consultancy Services.
Just dream on. That is what the tories are doing.

Another company leaves UK to where?

Sussex medicines firm takes production line abroad in white van to beat Brexit ban
UK assembly line at standstill as pharmaceutical company sets up in Amsterdam and plans EU expansion

A Sussex pharmaceutical company has told how it had to bundle a production line into a white van and take it to Amsterdam to beat a Brexit medicines ban.

The impromptu four-wheeled mission to the Netherlands has secured the supply of the asthma drug Ventolin for France, where the company, Mediwin, had a huge order book.

Lisa Cooke, its finance director, said the company had been preparing for Brexit since the referendum but had not counted on an overnight block on wholesale distribution from the UK into EU member states.

“It was a bit of a white-knuckle ride a couple of weeks ago. We had stockpiled supplies, particularly of Ventolin because it was being sold in huge quantities in France and we were getting anxious that we would run out,” she said. “So our production manager hired a van and took five machines – which was essentially one production line – to the Netherlands. He got the line up and running. We’ve rented an apartment and got six people working over there now. And so far we’ve hired 15 people in the Netherlands and they want another 10 or 11.”
They find it so easy here and we are not complaining. Was on the Dutch news as well.

A thought and opinion:

Brexit is a machine to generate perpetual grievance. It's doing its job perfectly
Rafael Behr wrote:The story of plucky Britain standing up to bullying Brussels spares leavers the discomfort of admitting they voted for a con.

Brexit has changed everything about Britain’s relationship with the European Union, and also nothing. For anyone trying to do business across borders newly gummed with bureaucracy, the comparison is stark and painful. But in politics, an old pattern is playing out – a cycle of suspicion and self-sabotage that began long before the 2016 referendum.

It starts with the belief that Britain does not depend on its neighbours for trade or anything else. That leads to neglect of the diplomacy required to make the partnership work. Going against the grain of economics and geography escalates every negotiation into a test of national self-esteem. Each adjustment for reality is resented as a surrender of sovereignty.

Euroscepticism is a machine for generating perpetual grievance. It works by making Brussels the enemy, spoiling relations and serving up the soured mood to a domestic audience as proof that the other side does not want to be friends.

Brexit has dismantled the institutional platform on which that drama used to be played, but it does not change the economic and strategic dynamics. The UK still needs things from Brussels, but it has lost the leverage it had from a seat at the EU summit table. This makes it harder for Boris Johnson to play the old double game of public belligerence and private compromise. (On that score, EU membership was the way previous prime ministers used to have their cake and eat it.)

Johnson has no interest in the practical side of European diplomacy. His 2019 promise to “get Brexit done” expressed a personal preference for changing the subject of British politics – a preference that chimed with the enervated public mood. Since Johnson only applies his brain to things when he can no longer hide from them, not talking about UK-EU relations allows him also to stop thinking about them.

There is no defence of Johnson’s deal if the ambition was serious advancement of the national interest. But there is another test. It is the one that matters most to the architects of Brexit, although they never admit it, even to themselves.

For the true believers, a good Brexit is one that keeps the grievance alive; that makes foreigners the scapegoat for bad government; that continues to indulge the twin national myths of victimhood and heroic defiance. Measured for that purpose, Johnson’s pointless Brexit is perfect.
While also maintaining the smoke curtain around the off-shore accounts.

The UK was a great partner:

UK failed to inform EU countries about almost 200 killers and rapists
Exclusive: total of 112,490 criminal convictions not sent to relevant EU capitals over eight-year period

The conviction of 109 killers, 81 rapists and a man found guilty of both crimes in UK courts was not passed on to the criminals’ home EU countries due to a massive computer failure and subsequent cover-up, the Guardian can reveal.

The most serious cases are among a total of 112,490 criminal convictions not sent to the relevant EU capitals over an eight-year period due to a catastrophic computer glitch, which some fear has put lives at risk.

The scandal largely involves dual nationals, who are only rarely deported even after lengthy prison sentences, leaving EU member states potentially blind as to whether those convicted of crimes in the UK have since entered their country.

The revelation will be highly embarrassing at a time when UK police forces are often relying on goodwill for continued cooperation on the sharing of information after the loss of access to EU databases due to Brexit.
Once again failure of official data.

EU postpones setting date for ratifying Brexit trade deal
Move follows Boris Johnson being accused of breaking international law for second time over Northern Ireland

The European parliament has postponed setting a date for ratifying the trade and security deal with Britain after Boris Johnson was accused of breaking international law for a second time over Northern Ireland.

The chamber’s political groups agreed on Thursday to wait in light of the latest row with Downing Street, with some senior MEPs warning that the Christmas Eve deal will not be passed at all if the UK goes ahead with its plans.

The UK was accused by the European commission of breaking international law for a second time on Wednesday after ministers said they would unilaterally extend a grace period on a range of checks on trade between Northern Ireland and Great Britain. The commission responded that under the Brexit withdrawal agreement, the decision should have been agreed with the EU.

During discussions with commission officials on Monday night, the claim that international law had been broken was denied by David Frost, who has recently been given a seat in cabinet and responsibility for EU relations. The UK decision has nevertheless infuriated the Irish government and officials in Brussels.

Sources in the European parliament said that as a result a decision on when the trade and security deal would be ratified had been delayed. It had been expected that a vote would be held on 25 March but following a meeting on Thursday it has been left off the parliamentary agenda for now.

The vote could potentially be delayed until late April to allow MEPs to follow how the row over the Northern Ireland border develops.

Simon Coveney, Ireland’s deputy prime minister, said the EU was considering legal action through the European court of justice.

The EU are negotiating with a partner they simply can’t trust,” he told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland programme on Thursday. “That is why the EU is now looking at legal options and legal action, which means a much more formalised and rigid negotiation process as opposed to a process of partnership where you try to solve the problems together.”
