The primaries of neither party are geared to select the best candidate. They are battlefields for various contenders to fight it out among themselves. Voting procedures and delegates are no more than stage props the purpose of which are to hide the knifings and kneecappings the various factions inflict on each other. The winner is the last man standing. If he is also the best man in terms of policies is sheer coincidence.

As a lifelong independent I have no idea what the Democratic party poobahs are thinking, so this could be way wrong.

If conventional wisdom applies in this election, I guess they'd think AOC would bring out enough Trump voters to offset her impact with progressive voters. In the parlance of the political analysts, her negatives are too high.
