No. We don't discriminate that way. Man, woman or child, we just let them die equally in the offshore prisons of Papua New Guinea and Nauru. It's a bi-partisan policy too. The Liberal/National coalition as well as Labor support it. Only the Greens are opposed, but they only have 1/150 seats in the House of representatives and 9/76 in the Senate.

So is the Trump's media machine going to distance Cohen or ramp up their attacks on investigators and prosecutors?

I find myself really quite muddled by this man. He is clearly an idiot and his grasp of the issues he has on his plate seems to be slight to say the least - dangerously so. And yet he seems to mold reality around him - he creates his own narrative and it seems to me that if enough people buy into it, they will forget the old modes and subscribe to his slight of hand..and hey presto - the issue will have been redefined and solved by the new meta narrative.

It is like some sort of spooky reframing exercise (something one does in family therapy and systems problem solving - part of my professional training - not that I think he consciously does that..or from an informed level anyway).

I could be talking arse gas of course and his approach might all come crashing down.

Everything he does and says depends on the fact that a significant number of Americans, mostly those with little serious education, are angry and bitter, and from that emerges as a hatred for education and any form of intellectual activity, which they link to past political elites, not only Democrat but the "old" Republicans as well. If he can continue to capture that audience, he will survive...

:ask:

I hadn't heard about Manafort being sentenced. Nor even that he'd stood trial, or pleaded guilty, or whatever it was. I must be out of touch with reality.

But Rudy Giuliani, now there's a man with his finger on the pulse, or something.

'Rudy Giuliani's pardon-teasing is straight out of the articles of impeachment against Nixon'
President Trump's former campaign chair Paul Manafort is in jail, though if Rudy Giuliani has his way, that may not be for long.

Giuliani, serving as Trump's personal lawyer, implied that Manafort could earn a presidential pardon, presumably in exchange for his loyalty, in an interview with the New York Daily News on Friday. Manafort faces several charges in the Russia investigation, and he was ordered to jail Friday, his bail revoked for witness tampering, The Washington Post reports. But "when the whole thing is over," Manafort may get a pardon, Giuliani told the Daily News.

Turns out, that's shockingly similar to a reason former President Richard Nixon was nearly impeached. On Twitter, former President Barack Obama's adviser Dan Pfeiffer thought Giuliani's implication rang a bell, and Time correspondent Philip Elliott agreed. It's just like a line in the articles of impeachment almost levied on Nixon in 1974:

One might argue, after all, that a presidential pardon would amount to "rewarding" Manafort for good behavior. The proof is in the articles.

As previously noted, when Cambridge Analytica went under earlier this year, there was already a 'new' company
(Emmerdata) run by many of the same people behind Cambridge Analytica. It isn't the only one though.

'Data Propria, run by Cambridge Analytica alumni, working on Trump 2020 campaign'
Data Propria, a brand-new "data and behavioral science company" run by former staff at Cambridge Analytica, has been "quietly working" for the president’s 2020 re-election campaign, according to the Associated Press.

Two reporters from the news organization overheard Matt Oczkowski, the company’s president, tell someone in a public place that he and Brad Parscale, who is Donald Trump’s re-election campaign manager, were "doing the president’s work for 2020."

Neither Oczkowski nor Parscale immediately responded to Ars’ request for comment on Twitter. Oczkowski "denied a link to the Trump campaign, but acknowledged that his new firm has agreed to do 2018 campaign work for the Republican National Committee," according to the AP.

"Oczkowski had previously told the AP the firm had no intention of seeking political clients," the news service wrote. "After being informed the AP had overheard him directly discussing campaign work, he said his young company had changed course and that whatever he’d said about the 2020 campaign would have been speculative."

I wonder how many leaders will find pushing back on Trump to be good for their domestic polling.
