Around 33,000 Americans shot to death each year. I wonder how many are seriously injured?

I've only seen totals, not broken out by severity, but the best number I can find is over 67,000 per year.

So, at least 100,000 Americans are shot causing death or injury each year...

Based on that, given that many shots miss (say only 1 in 10 hit), it may well be that something like a million bullets are fired per year in the US attempting to shoot other human beings!

More likely someone will come along presently and tell us that a drug dealer in Chicago has a much greater chance of being shot at than a housewife in Des Moines, as if demographically and geographically uneven distributions don't occur anywhere else.

According to Everytown.Org, the murder rate for white males (2014 data) was 2.4/100000, for black males it was 30.7/100000. The distribution is far more racial than it is geographic, though in general metropolitan areas have higher rates. Unfortunately, the data isn't easy to extract. I keep meaning to do a bit of analysis of the FBI stats myself but never get around to it.

That's probably ten percent of the cases where is gun us used as a threat with no bullets fired.
And that's probably ten percent of the cases where the mention of a gun is used as a threat.

Of course, you have to know the lingo. To an Englishman, "I'll pop a cap in your fuckin ass" would just mean an invitation to some strange American gay sex.
