German shock at car exhaust tests on humans and monkeys

The German government has denounced experiments funded by German carmakers in which humans and monkeys reportedly inhaled diesel exhaust fumes.

German media say the health impact research was done by EUGT, a body funded by Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW.

Such tests could not be justified, the government said, demanding details. A minister called them "abominable".

That's actually why the animal trials were performed in the US, they wouldn't have been allowed in Germany.

The trials using humans went through validation by an ethics tribunal before being allowed. And it was allowed because the amount of nox used was below allowed legal limits and actually similar to what actual people working in traffic are exposed to regularly.

It was chemistry invention at the German best. No messing with solutions. (NaCN plus say acetic acid would do it). H-CN is a gas, but can be condensed to a liquid. Therefore they sought an absorbent that could absorb the gas. They found one. I don't know what it is, other than diatomaceous earth. The stuff was placed in tin cans under low pressure. If you opened the lid it came out fast enough.

You must be older than I, started using ski lifts at a younger age or skied at some god-forsaken shithole. The lifts at Perisher, Smiggins and Thredbo did not use Diesel engines when I was there between 1970 and 1972. Their power came straight from the Snowy Hydro-electric Scheme. Hah. Day-tickets for $3.50. Ski down Sun Valley till your knees gave out, which usually coincided with the time to have dinner, then socialise with the snow bunnies while their parents retired to play bridge - or so they said.
