The FBI is investigating people inspired by “kind of an Antifa ideology,” bureau Director Christopher Wray said Thursday.

Wray told members of the House Homeland Security Committee that people associated with the so-called anti-fascist or Antifa movement were subject to the FBI probe amid possible violent criminal activity.

“While we're not investigating Antifa as Antifa — that's an ideology and we don't investigate ideologies — we are investigating a number of what we would call anarchist-extremist investigations, where we have properly predicated subjects of people who are motivated to commit violent criminal activity on kind of an Antifa ideology,”

But those antifas are every where, from Black Lives Matter protests, Pipeline protests, Dreamer protests....... Of course just that small number of violent troublemakers need worry, and the people that perhaps donated cash to them. Or lured them across State lines to instigate a crime.

Blocking a Federal highway even with a peaceful protest can be considered a Federal crime, by the right kind of prosecutor

There's nothing surprising about this. I used to go on 'demos' quite a lot in my yoof - from Anti-this and that to pretty middle of the road stuff like CND marches. Around Parliament it was pretty common to see police photographers taking pics of people of 'potential interest'. Some of my fellow protesters saw it as evidence of a 'police state'. personally I always figured I would be doing exactly what they were doing if I was them - not that I liked it of course.

To be fair (even he deserves that..) we know what he meant. They will be watching anyone who is seen as a risk to public order.

To me, it's straightforward. If people, with whatever political motivation are violent in the course of a protest (other than in self defence) then normal police procedures should apply; they can be arrested an charged in the standard way. No need for FBI witch hunts...
