One of them murdered her within weeks, despite being passed as fit by "rigorous" vetting by social services.

And the BBC reporting is amazing. If you don't listen carefully, the fact that this was two gay men adopting a baby girl would be missed altogether. There was just one fleeting clue, in that the "husband" of the killer was working away.

So the BBC is now editing out what most people would regard as the most relevant part of the story.
Because it casts doubt on the politically correct assumption that gays will make just as good adoptive parents as anyone else.

It makes a joke of the BBC as a news provider. You are only hearing what THEY want you to hear.

There isn't any need for everyone to get in a tiff over this.

One, the article is a single incident, from which no broad conclusion can be drawn. There are many incidents of shaken baby syndrome and other physical abuse by all manner of parents.

Two, haven't been any stats presented here to suggest that gay parents are more likely to shake or hit their babies than straight parents. Whoever is making that assertion needs to present those stats to back it up.

Three, even if there are stats to that effect, it says nothing about individual gay people and any relevance of such a statistic would depend on how significant the correlation is and how dramatic the difference is between populations.

This incident sounds horrific, and I can't imagine treating a baby that way. The defense raised seems unlikely, in my experience, because babies can take fairly significant falls without getting the kind of injuries described in the article. Anyone who has raised kids, knows that they fall -- sometimes they climb out of their crib, or climb up on a couch, or tumble and slip - they're falling quite a bit. It takes a concerted effort to bang them up the way the article describes. It sounds like the expert witnesses were of that view too, and the jury did not believe the defense.

Such a crying shame. The poor little girl. If this guy couldn't handle it, he should have called someone. A neighbor, a friend, someone - pay a babysitter to come in and help when times are tough. Something.
