I think that the pseudo-scientific racialist aspect of Nazi Germany in large part lead to a bad taste in people's mouths regarding fascism. Overall the notion of private ownership and market forces coupled with centrally promoted culture and control of security related industries is a very efficient model. Of course ask most people what fascism is, and they know no definition outside of pejorative.

One of the first things the Italian fascists did was begin privatizing government owned assets and operations. Nazis did the same thing, as well as purging the socialist elements of the party.

for true (no state interference, no keynesian programs, no safety nets) capitalists, it does look like socialism.
