Hurricane Irma - 2017 is coming to town, apparently (for those of us in the northeastern Caribbean and Florida vicinity).
It's been described as a very powerful hurricane, rising to cat 3 very fast, and now sitting at cat-4-ish. It's heading into the leeward islands of the eastern Caribbean and is threatening some of the Antilles, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. A lot of the predicted tracks I'm seeing have it hitting the southern part of Florida around Friday or Saturday, and it has a chance to be a biggie.

A bit grim, yes, but we average about 6 or 7 hurricanes per year in the vicinity. The grim part is if they happen to hit major population centers. We're hoping this one veers off....

I'm sure St. Maarten and the rest of the Netherlands Antilles have everything well in hand. They plan things for the one in 10,000 year event, so I'm sure they've dug their polders and have their fingers in the dikes sufficiently that no significant damage will result from Irma.

Hey 42, are you gettin' outta Dodge? We're going to decide no later than Friday AM, because if we do get out we want to avoid as much of the traffic as possible. We'll head up to the mountains, either stay at my sister's place in North Carolina or rent somewhere in Tennessee. At least we'd be inland. I'm getting supplies in today, though, in case we stay.

I figure I'll ride it out here and when it passes take the dinghy up to the boat. It's in a very sheltered marina on floating docks, and is completely self-sufficient. Got water, power, A/C, fridge full of beer, and a functional shitter. What more could a man ask? At least I'll avoid the looters and zombies that are bound to show up.
