It's a non-binding plebiscite, and unlike in state and federal elections, it is not compulsory for Australian citizens to cast a vote. So it comes down to which side can muster the most participants. Michael Kirby, a retired Justice of the High Court of Australia who has never made a secret of the fact that he is gay, is among a bunch who (rightfully) regard the plebiscite as unnecessary and (idiotically) urge people to boycott it. Although surveys in recent years indicate that a substantial majority of the public is in favour of allowing same sex marriage, it will not surprise me if the plebiscite returns a "no".
The government is funding the plebiscite with 160 million tax payers' dollars. Additionally, private entities are paying to place ads in the media. The "no" side has already warned us that a "yes" result will mean that boys will be forced to wear dresses at school and adopt a gender-neutral identity. One of our federal politicians announced that if same sex marriages becomes legal, there'll be nothing stopping us from marrying the Sydney Harbour bridge. I'm just waiting for dire predictions of legal paedophilia, incest and bestiality now.
In short, SNAFU.
