The Lake District - will this ruin everything?

Post by Rum » Mon Jul 10, 2017 5:02 pm

I live half an hour from the English Lake District - an area of outstanding beauty and really very special. Now the bastards have made is a UNESCO World heritage sight like the Grand Canyon, Taj Mahal and what have you.

This will probably bring millions more people to it (as well as my small city) every year - a 'good thing' for local businesses no doubt but I like the fact that it is a bit of a sleepy backwater here to be honest. Here's a link to the story and some pics that show the place off a bit.

Why do we have to ruin everything!??

IF the gummint takes its responsibility, even an afflux of lake district lovers won(t ruin things... If they act like tories, of course, everything will be ruined since the district is not a private property that the owner wants preserved...

Actually conservation is currently excellent considering the numbers that already visit. There are so many I don't even bother going there in the summer. In the winter I have the place almost to myself.

My fear is that the potentially huge increase in numbers will overwhelm the place and it will become a museum rather than the working landscape is still just about remains.

I don't get it.
The lake district is nice. That's all. Nothing special ever happened there. Couple of writers connected with it, small bit of mining. That's about it.

Maybe I'm missing something. It's bloody wet. You don't often see the tops of the hills. Nice on a sunny day though.

North Wales is prettier, with far more rustic charm, social heritage, and olde worlde primitivism. But unfortunately It's also full of Welsh.

The Welsh are the last remains of the true Britons, it's all the saxons that should go back to Germany and Denmark.

I've never been there, but my mental picture of it is inextricably linked to my favourite books as a child, the Swallows and Amazon series...

Post some pictures! :lay:

Is this the area that you used to post pictures of you walking your dog(s)? That was truly beautiful.

What's to ruin?
A couple of manky ponds, with overpriced pubs, and a view you can't see because it is either raining or misty?
Then there are the tacky Beatrix Potter figurines they sell to the tourists, and the nuclear power station round the corner.

Get that all over the world it is nothing special. WTF so many people get watery eyed about defeats me. Go up to Highlands of Scotland or down to Kerry in Ireland. Austria, Norway and even Sweden. Nothing special.

Just because some old git wrote books about it? Or poems?
