The reason is there is no way out. The referendum was conclusive and a U turn on that decision is not going to happen.

How long this can go on for though is anyone's guess. May is staggering from one vote in Parliament over this, giving ground to one side and then the other. The reason she is doing so is not because she agrees with the amendments to the proposed agreement with the EU being put forward by both sides but because she knows if a vote on any part of her legislation is lost in Parliament there would be a high risk of a vote of no confidence in the Government being passed and that would very likely result in a new (possibly Labour) government. Labour are as divided as much as the Conservatives however.

They have goty themselves - and us - in a real pickle.
But where to now? Moggsy is getting his way and the UK will become a tax haven with rich just getting richer.

It is turning out to be relatively easy for the hard Brexiteers to sabotage May's attempts to soften the landing after we leave. If all else fails we end up with World Trade Agreemtn rules and start picking up the pieces.

..and lovely French cheese becomes a luxury item overnight!

Well, maybe travelling to Calais or Paris or Lille to get a fresh supply might be affordable...

Used to be a profitable enterprise 'duty frees' as they were called. Did it myself years ago and thought of it as a real money saver.

What did I say:

Brexit: Anna Soubry says Jacob Rees-Mogg is now 'running our country' with Theresa May no longer 'in charge'
Pro-EU Tory calls for 'government of national unity' to cope with the crisis – including Labour backbenchers

Well, I tend to avoid duty free shops in airports like the plague, as they concentrate on high end items that I can't afford in the first place, and actually reinstate part of the duty by taking incredibly big profit margins, to the point that, in many cases and unless you're actually an oil sheikh, buying there is not really a bargain at all.

No such thing as a free lunch albeit Brexit will be a money spinning boon for anyone with a small boat and interest in good old fashioned wine, tea, baked beans or tobacco smuggling as a trade. :tea:

Reminds me of old folk songs about smugglers, incredible how bandits can get so lionized.

Then again, Dick Turpin got his own tv series...

It was done on an industrial scale. Large warehouses full of wine, cigarettes and all sorts of other stuff that carried duty, located on the edge of towns like Calais and Boulogne.

The UK was financially a basket case after WW2 and until the mid 60s really. Everything was taxed. The lucky French and Germans just carried on.

They used to put on 'day trips' London to Calais and back in a day with space for your loot!

I can get that... fine Scotch is incredibly expensive here, and I hear it's even more expensive North of the Chunnel

Dutch government hires nearly 1,000 customs officials to prepare for 'no deal' Brexit
Political turmoil in the UK is concerning countries on the continent

The Dutch government has completed the hiring of nearly 1,000 new customs officers to prepare for a looming “no deal” Brexit, according to a senior official in the country.

Pieter Omtzigt, the rapporteur on Brexit for the Dutch parliament, confirmed the recruitment had taken place – as weeks of turmoil linked to Theresa May’s new plan for exiting the EU paralyse the British government and raise the prospect of the UK crashing out of the bloc.

“As you may be aware, the Netherlands are, after Germany, the second trading partner with the UK within the EU – even before France, for example,” Mr Omtzigt, a Christian Democrat MP told the BBC.

Rotterdam is TOO important for this country. It earns us so much. Just the goods to the rest of the EU is mind boggling.
